Jeff Hanneman, the guitarist/songwriter from Slayer has passed away today due to liver failure. This makes me sad, he was one of my favorites and wrote my favorite Slayer song.

Discussion value, what is your favorite Slayer song and how do you feel about this.

Saw this on my facebook-feed, and barely believed it.. Was never really a big Slayer fan, more into melodic and progressive stuff, but this really saddens me.

Considering the band's dispute with Lombardo (the drummer), and now this, that really just leaves Araya and King..

Seasons in the Abyss, South of Heaven or Bloodline. Prefer their slower, groovier stuff most of the time.

I couldn't really choose a favourite song, but I suppose that Seasons in the Abyss is my favourite album. As to how I feel about it, same as when anyone else I don't personally know dies, it's a shame it's happened but it doesn't really effect me in any way.

I grew up listening to these guys. This is a tremendous loss to the metal community. Rest in peace, you fucking genius.

My favorite song would most likely be Angel of Death. It was the first Slayer song I heard, and the impression it gave me has stuck with me to this day.

I guess you could, if you found it prudent.

Yeah, it's pretty damn unfortunate. Slayer definitely helped establish and influence extreme metal, not least of all death metal, which has become such a big part of my life and a passion. So I certainly have my respects to pay to Slayer.

I'll be listening to some early Slayer albums today in memory. Always sucks when a musician passes away. R.I.P.

Edit: Not sure about any kind of favourite song. Slayer is more a band I have respected and acknowledged, rather than become an actual fan of (though I'm familiar with Reign in Blood - who isn't?). 'Criminally Insane' comes to mind as a great standout track, as does the title track of the second album 'Hell Awaits' and 'Chemical Warfare'. I guess one of those three then.

Shit.
I kind of knew this was a possibility but you just never really think the worst will happen.

I remember hearing that he got bit by a spider some years ago, and he was sitting out for awhile (At this time I think they said it was a brown recluse, at which point I was expecting him to be gone awhile cause a bite from that is not to be taken lightly)

Then I read another article a year later I think saying that he was still out and the group weren't sure if he was coming back, and that Gary Holt would be almost assuredly taking over for him.

Now this.....fuck, it seems weird. But it always does when someone passes unexpectedly.

I wasn't always the biggest fan of Slayer, in fact for some time I thought they were overrated.
Then one of my friends said "I liked'em better when they were young and nasty" and sent me this.
"TorrrrTTTTAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH is what I love!"
Changed my whole opinion on them in an instant.
After that I started getting to know the bands discog a bit more.

Some favorites that emerged were Angel of Death, Chemical Warfare and this, probably my favorite Slayer song.

An often maligned and ignored album, I found this song to be amazing, not for what t does, but for what it doesn't, what is between the lines. The whole atmosphere makes you feel like something is lurking just beyond that never materializes.

Even after really getting into them, I never truly dug most of their newer stuff.
Disciple is fun though.

RIP Hanneman, and thanks for the great music.

I saw this on Facebook. Damn shame, the guy still had a lot of life in him. At least now the devil has a badass lineup for his own metal band. Jeff Hanneman and Dimebag Darrell on guitar, Dio on vocals and Clive Burr on drums. Tell me you wouldn't listen to that.

On the other hand, now there's only one non-asshole member of Slayer that's actually in the band. I have the same feelings for Kerry King and Dave Mustaine: great guitarists but my god are they fucking assholes.

Favourite song? Some say it's overrated but it's famous for a reason.

Shattered when I saw this news - just... shattered. Jeff wrote some of the greatest metal songs in history.

As for favourite Slayer tracks there's a whole heap of them. I prefer their older stuff as a rule but the last few times I've seen them live the setlists were almost perfect. Angel of Death, Raining Blood, Die By The Sword, Chemical Warfare, War Ensemble, it goes on.

By coincidence I'm going to see Obituary with a mate tonight, I'm thinking they'll be playing to a roomfull of morose metalheads...

They made a Facebook post about it. Who knows, they may play a Slayer cover in tribute. Can you imagine that awesomeness? Trevor's heavy as fuck tuning with John's vocals performing a Slayer song.

Absolutely gutted, he was a brilliant guy and has such a place in the making of metal as it is today. I've just gotten back home from a night out, when acts as diverse as Pantera, He Is Legend, Kvelertak and Cancer Bats pay tribute to you, it's really a sign that you were amazing.

Well done Jeff, you were great.

Heard about this earlier and had a sad. While Slayer was still probably my least favorite of the big 4, they where still pretty damn good, and you would have to be crazy not to see how influential a ton of their stuff was. Sad day for metal. :(

This classic track seems sadly appropriate:

Never been a massive Slayer fan, but it's a major loss to the metal genre, the stuff of Slayer I don't mind is largely older stuff.

I was never really into Slayer... Until I saw them live.

Good god that show was amazing, it completely changed my view. Those guys get batshit insane onstage.

It's time for a Slayer marathon I think.

Eh, never did like Slayer. I much prefer more melodic stuff, Metallica is as close to thrash or death metal that I'm willing to get.

That said, it's never a good day when a metalhead of any kind passes away. My sympathy to his fans, family and band.

I don't even know enough about Slayer to say what subgenre they mainly did, and I had no idea who Jeff Hanneman was before reading this thread, and cannot identify a single piece of his work having done so.

I do not follow music very closely.

I is sad.

OT: South of Heaven. It got me through exams, break-ups, crisis, despair without causing myself or anyone else any harm. It allowed me to see the light, die a little, move on.

Shit still sucks. Life always comes with an end, and we all think Jeff went too soon. Well, maybe he would disagree. I don't know about the spider bite or any of the stories we got lately. Maybe it was all bullshit and he really, really didn't fancy hanging around much no more.

No Lager for me, Jeff. I'd rather drink all of Motörhead's Guiness, so they can kick me out again (while I steal the rest of their Guiness)... nah, not even Guiness. Just some California Pale Ale. Oh my. It will have to do.
