It's fine to not want a game due to it's subject matter, not going to criticize your choice but I am curious about something. Would you be against a game of chess where the player side were modeled as criminals and the opponent were modeled as police. In this scenario, your objective is to out maneuver and destroy the enemy, the police. Would this be against your morals?brazuca said:Orekoya said:geldonyetich said:It's ironic that a game I applaud for shaming a corporate money-grubbing mentality because it succeeded on morally-superior indy development mentality is not going to get my purchase because I'm ashamed to see anyone playing a game about being part of a team of money-grubbing assholes who are so morally unreprehensible that they think nothing of gunning down innocents (and each other) in order to score a quick buck by performing a bank heist.
Even if it's "just pretend," this setting puts me in a moral crisis that was really unnecessary. I really want to encourage the former behavior of indy development without corporate fuckery, because I've been enduring decades of crappy games as a result. However, the backdrop of this game is so severely off the hook that I still won't vote for my wallet for it.![]()
Not sure if this would be considered warning bait or not but it is just way too appropriate a response.
So now I can make games about plane hitting towers and achieving massive points by doing so. Geldonyetich is right. I'm talking about my exp. alone, but I come from a family of cops. I don't mind killing cops in a video game, but GTA for example is ludicrous about it. Payday is the only thing you do is gun down cops. Like a lot. That is why I used the 9/11 reference. People are so much into that double standard that some times it's hard to realize how sleazy and imoral some media stories became.
Also going back on GTA, that is one of the reasons GTA goes for the comic relief so much. Payday wants to be taken serious, when we know it simply can't. Another example are those eroge games made in Japan about raping youngster. Playing Payday (yes I played the first one) and saying well it's okay, it's not real, to me atleast sounds the same excuse as playing those eroge game and saying: of course it's not wrong. It's not real...
I haven't played it yet, but I'm pretty sure that there are stealth options in the game where you can do an entire mission without shooting a single cop (though you probably have to deal with staff members and I don't know if there's non-lethal options to taking out security guards other than yelling at them and hoping they surrender, or just smacking them in the face), but of course when the shit hits the fan, yes, you probably don't have a choice...geldonyetich said:Personally, I include the cops with the innocents. I don't think the game gives a choice about gunning those down.Bat Vader said:It's more up to the players if they want to gun down innocent civilians or not but if I was to play Payday 2 and one of my teammates was hurting innocent civilians I would not hesitate to take that player down.
I know it's not classy to quote the OP but I was thinking during the vid that you mentioned promoting Jim. You say that it didn't blow gajillions on marketing but have also said before, e.g. your Konami ep, that not promoting a game can be devastating. I know the answer will proberly be, like most answers, to find the middle ground but it would make an interesting ep to hear how you think promoting games should go. I know it's not your area of expertise but it would be interesting.Jimothy Sterling said:snip
Payday2 was profitable off of pre-orders alone. Every single release day and after sale is pure profit. So even if they only sold 10 copies that's still pure profit.uanime5 said:So Jim assumes that when a game he likes is successful it must be because the developers made the game they wanted instead of asking focus groups what they wanted in order to appeal to as many people as possible. Given that Jim presents no evidence to support this claim and even admits that the staff at Pay Day 2 did ask a focus group what they wanted (guess what asking your player what they want is the same as asking a focus group what they want) it seems that Jim couldn't be bothered to do any research as to why Pay Day 2 was successful and instead just made up a bunch of reasons that conformed to his dogma.
Jim is also dishonest about Payday 2 sales as he only mentions that some stores ran out of copies, rather than how many copies were sold. This is misleading because if a shop has 10 copies of Payday 2 and 11 people want to buy it then this shop will have sold out. Unless Payday 2 was able to sell 3-5 million copied then all this shows is that to have huge sales you do need to appeal to a broad audience.
And then get kicked for it. Great!Bat Vader said:Now I want to play Payday 2 like Mr. Orange and pretend my character is an undercover cop and when the cops show up at the robbery I just gun down my teammates.
No, it wouldn't. Any experienced player would tell you it wouldn't. And Overkill also doesn't think it would and they don't want to waste time on that kind of non-sense.Bat Vader said:Now that I think about it I think an 8 person mode where 4 play as the robbers and 4 play as a Swat Team would be cool to see in PayDay 2.
Whilst your idea is a sure fire way to get a kick right up your royal arse; an idea has sprung to mind about how interesting it would be if the human players were actually playing as undercover cops as part of a larger group and the job is to successfully pull the heist, avoid any innocent fatalities whilst avoiding the suspicion of the gang to lead you to their hideout. THAT sounds interesting.Bat Vader said:Now I want to play Payday 2 like Mr. Orange and pretend my character is an undercover cop and when the cops show up at the robbery I just gun down my teammates.
