Fact is that AAA studios are really just out for cash. Whether you accept the "they are corporations, it's not their fault" excuse or not, is a personal matter. However, I am pleased by recent developments in the indie sector, such as kickstarter, a greater availability of AAA engines with licenses geared towards indie developers. I see a revolution on the horizon.
