John Madden Retires, Madden NFL Doesn't

Legendary Tinactin [http://www.nfl.com/]-powdered footsteps anytime soon.

Madden began his coaching career in 1967 as a linebacker coach for the Pro Football Hall of Fame [http://www.raiders.com/IntroPage1.aspx] in 2006.

"It's time. I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I'm home and, more importantly, when I'm not," Madden said in a statement released by NBC Sports [http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/]. "It's been such a great ride. The NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion - it still is."

Madden broke into the videogame business all the way back in 1988 with the original John Madden Football [http://www.mobygames.com/game/john-madden-football], published by Electronic Arts for the Apple II, Commodore 64 and DOS platforms. In the 20 years since, the Madden NFL series has sold more than 70 million copies worldwide and it's a relationship EA plans to maintain, saying it "will continue to produce new versions of EA Sports Madden NFL with John's collaboration."

"His retirement has no impact on EA, other than us wishing him the very best in this next stage in his life," an EA Sports rep told Kotaku [http://kotaku.com/5215076/john-madden-retires-will-have-no-impact-on-madden-nfl-ea-says]. "He's earned the time off."

"John is a true sports icon who has made an indelible impact on the sport of football which will be felt forever," EA Sports [http://www.easports.com] President Peter Moore said in a statement. "His prolific coaching and broadcasting careers, as well as his distinct role in shaping the EA Sports football experience have redefined how multiple generations have come to know and love the sport with unrivaled passion. We're excited to see his legacy live on in the 21st year of Madden NFL football, and well beyond. It's been a privilege for EA Sports to have had the strong relationship we've had with John for more than two decades and one that will continue into the future."

My all time favorite John Madden quote: "Now here's a guy who can see better when he has his contacts on."

Personally I'm glad he is retiring. I've grown tire of listening to him spout his "deep insight" into the working of the game. Sure he was a good coach but the game has changed since then and he is just a painful reminder of the past.

Though Madden NFL Will not likely die until football itself dies, and that hopefully never happens.

Why is it that so many people on the escapist hate this franchise? We get it you dont fancy america football, stop gripping about it, no one is forcing you to buy the games. If your not athletic dont be so proud to tell everyone you arent, its still a video game and this is a video game website.

As for madden his voice is going to be missed in the broadcast booth, no one comes close to being as good as he is currently. Sure he rambled on and on specially in the madden games but one of the few people doing commentating in any sports that knew what he was talking about.
I dont hate Madden. I quite like American football, you cant live there and not get into it. I still follow how the Vikes are doing and smile when I think about John Randle in his war paint, talking smack.

Its more about releasing the same game over and over again with a tweaked roster.

I have the same issue with FIFA et al.

Different sports, mate. If Rugby players took the sort of hits pro football players do, they'd need to wear the same sort of pads.

Also, all sports are kind of wimpy compared to water polo.

"John is a true sports icon who has made an indelible impact on the sport of football which will be felt forever"

Was I the only one who read that as 'inedible'?

I personally like the parody of him on the pilot for Family Guy:
"I think the fans are here to see some FOOTBALL!!!"
"Uh, John? We're in commercial."
"...FOOTBALL!!"

yeah he had some good ones, mine is "from the waist down he's got the best legs in football"

a whole thread could be made about the crazy stuff he's said over the years, the odd part is he never flew anywhere, he'd always drive his bus to the different cities
