My question is simple... How do you think the Joker got his scars?

I mean, first he said it was his Father, then he said it was himself... but what's your opinion on it? Lets see who has the most GAwesome theory...

Example
"You wanna know how I got these scars? Well, let me tell ya... through song!
Never open a bag of chips with a chainsaw..."

You wanna know how I got these scars?

My father was a barber, and one day he went off a little bit crazier than usual....

I think he got cut up with a knife.

Honestly that's one of things that I liked about the Joker, you never know how he got those scars. He tells you but the story changes for each person he tell it to. And since he's The Joker you'll never be sure which story is the truth. It's that mystery that made the Joker such an appealing character, you don't know who he is, you don't know where he came from, you don't know what he's after, and it's entirely possible that neither does he. All you know is he has a lot of explosives and he doesn't care what happens to whoever gets between him and whatever he wants.

You wanna know how I got these scars? Well...My father...My father, he was a baker, y'see. And well, my father, he made these cupcakes...Big as your head, he'd make 'em, and well, I couldn't eat them whole...He'd tell me to, but I...I just couldn't.
Well, one day...My father, he started yelling at me, telling me I was hurting his feelings when I couldn't eat that damn cupcake.
"Why don't you just open up your mouth and eat it?" He says.
I told him...I said, "Pop...My mouth is too small. I can't fit the whole cupcake in my mouth."
So he takes this great big knife...And he puts it riiiight, there on my mouth...And he says, "Son...You just need a bigger mouth."

Yeah, I don't know where I was going with that. I was just amused at the idea of the Joker eating huge baked goods.

I think he got shot in the face, and that the plastic surgeons did all they could, but not enough.

Makes sense, especially considering that's what happened with the original comic book character.

"If I have a past I prefer it to be multiple choice" Is not the exact quote, but it's close enough... yeah. That's a line from Batman: The Killing Joke, written by Alan Moore. Great line

Considering the type of wound he has is known as a "Glasgow Smile", he probably got into a barfight with some drunken gang member, most probably somewhere in Scotland.

But then again, I'm thinking of Heath Ledger's portrayal.

Maybe he was in a gang once and did something to upset the higher-ups who gave him the Glasgow smile and left him for dead. The intense agony may also be what made him so bloodthirsty.

As a matter of fact one of the first lines the joker says in the movie is "Whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you stranger"

I don't know and it's not important. It is better as a mystery, and his joking (ha ha) attitude about it I think shows that it was probably just some accident.

the entire premise of the movie was based on that comic. aside from joker changing his origin story, the whole idea behind the joker trying to prove that everyone was just as crazy as he was under the right circumstances. also they both had the same feel for the joker. he has always gone back and forth between silly and creepy. both the dark knight and the killing joke were on the creepy side, where as tim burtons definately went more for the silly. honestly, the only actor that walked that line perfectly was mark hamill in batman: the animated series. hands down, my favorite portrayal of the joker ever. plus it blew my mind to find out that the joker was luke skywalker.

Spoiler-ed because might be offensive to some, but explains the reason perfectly.
