Hiya escapists.

So, you're lounging around in a random thread, having fun, giving praise to Nasrin, regular forum stuff, when you notice a random greenhorn complaining that they don't know how to put things in spoiler boxes...
Naturally your first instinct is to help, as the responsible and bb-savvy forum member that you are.
But how does one explain bb-code to a rookie in a medium that transforms code into images and spoiler boxes?

I've seen many a clumsy attempt to explain how to write code without writing the code itself, and it is without fail confusing for the rookie user.
That's why I'm here: to tell you that there is a way to write code without having the code activate and turn into nonsense in the finished post.
Behold:

The secret contents of the spoiler box

"How does one do this, great teacher?"

It is surprisingly simple, dear student. Let me write that above line again, but make it appear the way it does in the code that makes up this post:

Code:
[[[color=black]color=black[/color]]spoiler[[color=black]/color[/color]]] The secret contents of the spoiler box [[[color=black]color=black[/color]]/spoiler[[color=black]/color[/color]]]
Do you see?
Let me try to make the code easier to understand:

Code:
[color=red][[/color][[color=black]color=black[/color]][color=red]spoiler[/color][[color=black]/color[/color]][color=red]][/color] [color=red]The secret contents of the spoiler box[/color] [color=red][[/color][[color=black]color=black[/color]][color=red]/spoiler[/color][[color=black]/color[/color]][color=red]][/color]
Now the code that is outlined in red will be visible to the reader.
You see, bb-code loses its effect if you try to write extra code inside its brackets. However, the code that you write inside the brackets will still work, provided you've written it correctly.
That, combined with the fact that some code, like
Code:
[color=black]
is invisible to the reader, means that if you try to manually color your bb-code black, it will stop working.
You can use this to your advantage when explaining the ropes to newcomers.

You can also use simpler code than
Code:
[color=black]
You can for example bold the text inside the brackets, but this might lead to some confusion.

Hopefully, you now know how to handle a situation if a newcomer asks you how to write some piece of code.
Jonluw away.
And you owe me $5 by the way.

I always found that the easiest way to learn code is to just quote someone who has used it. If someone is too lazy to even do that, I'm not going to faff about trying to teach them. Besides, wouldn't writing it the way you did just confuse the less savvy forum goer? Wouldn't they be really confused how you managed to write it without activating it, and thus assume something has been changed? Maybe not.

Anyway, good on you for trying to help.

Pretty neat, although I agree with manic that quoting someone works well too (and is the way I learned BB-code.)

I used to try telling people to quote me, but they seemed sort of bevildered by it, fumbling around trying to figure out what it was I'd written.
i.e. They seem to need at least some sort of instructions, and it's sort of tough to write instructions like that without illustrating the point.
Or at least I think so.

Do you except credit cards? I only have a $20 note.

Most people I see explaining it show it like this;
[*spoiler*]Darth Vadar is Luke's father[*/spoiler*]
And then a comment like "Do this but without the *"

I'd just link them to this

Oh sure, I can take the credit card off your hands. Just send it to me by snail mail and we're good.
What's you pin?
