Despite my deeply seated dislike of grinding, non-interactivity, etc., I have bought one JRPG, Disgaea 2, and played it for a day or so. (Who knows, maybe I'll even continue on some rainy day.) The characters and atmosphere were fun. Combat was at least somewhat tactical, not a long animation borefest like it apparently is on many JRPGs. So I think D2 might not be a bad choice as far as JRPG's go.

I'm also interested in trying the Shin Megami Tensei / Persona games due to the setting. Other JRPGs, not really.

how many western RPGs are there tho really?

is it just me or are bethesda and bioware the only companies continously making RPGs?

maybe just because I loath them but it feels like JRPGs come out by the truckload where as western rpgs, we get like 1 a year. which is odd considering the success of mass effect, oblivion, fallout 3, etc.

Even if you don't like JRPG's there's going to be some that offend you less than others. Same applies to any other genre.

For example, my major beef with JRPGs was best summed up by Yahtzee in one of his reviews - that I have no part in the story, I'm just a chaperon charged with carting the (often moronic) characters from one cutscene to the next. Even if I see a trap coming, I have no choice but to shove the protagonists into it so the damned story can continue. In some particularly egregious cases, I am reduced to the role of a willing accessory to the villain's plans, just because the writers wanted to involve a massive, "genius" plot but were unable or unwilling to make it something a reasonable person would stumble into.

However, not all JRPGs are going to follow this format to the same degree. As a result, I find Dragon Quest game to be significantly more palatable than Final Fantasy games on average, even though I'd prefer the better WRPGs to either. Similarly, I know a guy who hates JRPGs for being too "anime" but loves Earthbound, mechanically a standard-issue JRPG differentiated by it's Americana settings and unique artistic style.

So, yes, there ARE such things as a "JRPGs for people who hate JRPGs", it's just that there's probably a better way to describe them.
