So, in the aftermath of E3, I've drawn some ire from people on communities all over the internet about my distaste for the direction of the Tomb Raider game. The one overbearing complaint that has been leveled at me is "You haven't played it yet! It hasn't come out! You can't say it sucks before it's come out!" Disregarding the fact that these people are sucking at the teat of a game that has not come out, what do my fellow escapists think? Is it all right to judge a game based on footage we have seen thus far? Should we withhold all opinions until said game is released? Or embrace the clear double standard that exists wherein it is all right to say certain viewpoints of a game before it is released (Tomb Raider will be AWESOME, Black Ops 2 will suck!), but it is somehow unacceptable to express a viewpoint apart from the one pre-judged by the Internet Hive Mind?

Welcome to the internet. If you don't like something other people like, they'll come up with all sorts of reasons why their opinion is better.

Crap, I accidentally posted this thread twice. If a mod could delete it, that would be awesome.

Just ignore those people. It's completely fine to judge a game before playing it based on what you have seen.

For example Dead space 3. Just from watching the trailer it's clear that the game is going to be more focused on Action now, I can therefore judge it to not be worth my time or money.

As long as you don't make huge sweeping judgements from uncertain things. For example Halo 4 will now let you choose things before the match such as starting weapon. This is not an excuse to assume that it must be a clone of COD now as not much is known about it.

It's mostly just based on your opinion though so don't worry about the many people you find who will write you essays on why your opinion is worse than theirs and how your completely wrong and need to agree with them.

While it's perfectly fine to use pre release media to determine if you're interested in the game in question, or to determine if you like the direction a game is taking or how it's being presented, it's not right to actually form a complete judgement of it. That's just as silly as saying that a game is going to be great before it's even out.

Go ahead and decide whether you'll want to play it or not from the pre-release information, that's what it's there for. Some people take it too far, acting like they already know everything exactly how it happens in the game. That's... dumb, I guess, but it's in our nature. Maybe just be more self aware about it?
