Not being religious, nor being particularly familiar with any of "The Holy Books," i've always wondered why Christians don't celebrate Jewish holidays. why don't they? as far as i was aware Jesus was Jewish, and so the god that both groups worship is the same. so why don't Christians celebrate passover, rosh hashana (i think that's how you spell it), chanukkah, yom kippur, etc.?

i understand this place might not be the most ideal to get an answer but i'm posting this question on multiple cites. if anyone could explain or send me to a link that might explain, i would appreciate it.

You're right, this isn't the best place to get an answer.

Because Christianity isn't Judaism?

Christianity is a very loose branch of Judaism, and it is believed by most Christians that Jews were responsible for Jesus' death (Pretty sure that the Pope recently said this wasn't the case, though).

Because, if we did, we'd be off work for a full third of the year.

Hey, wait a minute...

It's because Jesus fulfilled the Jewish prophecies, and rendered much of the Hebrew Law obsolete. Coupled with the fact that the church got so diverse, it was declared that Judaism was no longer a requirement.

Christianity evolved from Judaism and became it's own religion. Kind of like how when the catholic church broke apart and protestants, mormons, and the other jesus worshipping sects started popping up.

There really are two sources from where Christians find authority. Scripture, and Tradition.

Catholics hold most of the Traditional knowledge. What was Mary's mother's name? It's not in Scriptures, but from traditional knowledge, we know. They also hold Scriptures, some of which were rejected by the Protestants for one reason or another. I'll explain why they don't in a second.

Protestants, at the split, decided to only accept Scriptures as authoritative, and left Tradition to the Catholics. Now, that doesn't mean that some traditional knowledge isn't important, but things that were called "Tradition" were reason to force a split; see "Indulgences." Protestants wouldn't celebrate traditional Jewish holidays because they're not necessarily scriptural holidays.

Now, as to the specifics about your question, Jewish tradition really didn't translate well to the Gentile nations. Passover was in celebration of Jews being released from Egypt. A non-Jew really wouldn't find reason to celebrate. Chanukah was a celebration of a miracle that saved Jews from Roman oppression, and the Roman Catholics would have no reason to celebrate.

European Christians had little reason to celebrate most of the Jewish holidays, and eventually, many of the Christians began hatred of the Jews; see "Spanish Inquisition." Jews were seen as people who missed the boat, and from that, stemmed a lot of unnecessary hatred. You wouldn't celebrate the holidays of people you hate.

I hope that helped a little, feel free to ask me more, and I'll try to help.

Pretty much this. A lot of the more open-minded christians I know feel that the old testament is just background reading and the real important thing is all the new teachings in the new testament.

Mostly because Allot of those are laws handed down to the Jews. Christians aren't Jews. They're gentiles. Gentiles are essentially everyone who's not Jewish.
Jesus was a promise made to the Jews that would affect the rest of the world. Christians are the rest of the world. Jews are non gentiles who have not accepted Jesus. In the bible it's kind of like this:
Gentile (that means anyone who's not Jewish) + Jesus = Christian
Jew + jesus = christian
Jew are kind of just an outdated system in the bible.
Allot of their laws apply only to Jews or members of the synaptic covenant.
Also this thread should be in the religion and politics rather than here.

The main reason is that Jewish holidays were created specifically for the Jewish people and are usually representative of an important time in Jewish history (the passover, that whole mess with Haman in the book of Esther, etc). Hence, you will still see Christians who are Jews (heredity speaking) celebrate Jewish holidays. But as these holidays and traditions were never intended for Gentiles, Gentile Christians generally don't celebrate them. In fact, I believe there is one letter that Paul wrote where he basically chews out one church for making Gentile converts obey the Jewish law and said something to the effect of "You couldn't even keep the law yourself! Why are you forcing it on them?"
