Hello everybody,
As I'm sure you could have already guessed, I am having computer problems. what may you ask? Well, I'll tell you, whenever I launch a game in steam I can play games as one does, however after about five to ten minutes my computer shuts down...

I'm very sure that it is a over-heating problem. I've gone to extreme lengths to try and solve it, putting my laptop on a table rather then my bed, having it on my bed but on a basket sort of deal, and even ( now this is the point one of you guys is gonna laugh and say "wow, he has no idea what he's doing and he probably broke his computer.) put a giant ice pack under my computer.

Also I'm not trying to run super "top notch" games with graphics so good your really only looking through a window, no, I'm just trying to run Sam & Max, A point and click adventure game, about as fast-paced as a snail stuck in maple syrup...

So, everyone I came to ask what I should do, should I continue what I'm doing hoping the problem only goes away? Take it into a computer repair shop? or buy one of those fancy pants "non-overheating" computer pads?

Does it overheat while not playing games?

The insides of a laptop can get pretty dirty which will cause overheating problems.

Even though this is probably not related, take out your battery and just use the power cord and see what happens.

Post the specs on your laptop.

The cooling pads can be helpful but it may not help your problem. A computer repair shop could be the answer but also expensive. I don't recommend any chain store type repair places although some have some very good techs, try a local place first.

As these people say, it could be a over heating problem. You could also check the event viewer on your computer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event_Viewer to see if you can find some more info on the problem. Most of the time the error messages created by it can be found on google. Good luck.

My laptop used to get really hot no matter where it was, but I never had it shut down. I did, however, get a cooling pad with two fans for 20$ (USB powered) and my computer doesn't even get warm to the touch anymore, and barely gets warm if the fan isn't on but it is on top of the pad.

It looks like that model uses an nvidia chip that over heats. You may want to check with Dell and see if it is still under warranty. Being 2 years old you are probably out of luck.
