with a book, movie, game what ever do you ever find it hard to get into if you don;t care about the main protagonist?

I get this problem somtimes often when the protagonist is an A-hole

Farcry 2: I didn;t mind that game, it was quite good but I never really understood my charachters perpose or motivations, (Some dialoge would have been nice)

Kayne and lynch: I literally Played this for 5 minutes then thourght...yeah I don't care about ether of you. Havnt look back since.

this is the reason I always have to play as a "good" charachter, (mass effect fallout) Im not going to drag their ass around and shoot things if they are unlikeable

There are exceptions: Kratos, He's unlikeable but thats sort of the point, and it works

I'm having trouble coming up with other examples but you get the point

Do you mean "bad person" unlikeable, or just "I don't like him" unlikeable? Alex from A Clockwork Orange is one, but not the other.

I thought Rico Rodriguez in Just Cause 2 was boring and I thought Rubi Malone from WET was a total and utter *****. It didn't kill the games completely for me, but they were definitely a contributing factor.

I mean you can't get into the work because you don't like the protagonist for what ever reason though some people, unlike me don;t often have this problem with fiction

several protagonists you just cant feel with, lets say for example alex mercer...a super mutant with tentacles growing out his arms with no limits and mostly indestructible? i feel so much for him...

Oh, well, in that case my answer is: No, that doesn't happen to me. I hate the protagonists in Meg Cabot's teen novels but I keep reading them.

Pretty much this. Why the hell would I wanna play a game in which my stupid idiot partner spazes out all because he can't take a pill a day and kills people who are important?

I don't think its the moral standing of the character that really makes the difference, more just whether they are well written or not.

For example, Humbert Humbert (the protagonist from Lolita) is hardly a character that I would naturally empathise with, however, Nabokov's writing is so vivid and the character is so well rounded that I found the book very enjoyable. Similarly Alex from a Clockwork Orange. Or to give a film example, Pulp Fiction is comprised entirely out of people whom I would not like to have lunch with.
Really great writers can make the most unlikable characters not only interesting, but can make you empathise with them.

I would have to politly disagree, even though izack didn't talk there was somthing about him, body languege Or somthing I don;t really know but I found him to be very sympethetic and even more interesting than say Geralt from "the witcher"

for me, I just didn't really care about him, I prefer it if a protagonist speaks.

I've only shown care to the characters in the Warcraft Lore. They just shine of awesomeness.

... And One Piece.

Any character from any game that has no backstory and isn't personified and given enough emotional depth to warrant my caring. Dead Space and FarCry 2 are great examples. As is Crysis, although that's a bloody good game!

This happens to me sometimes, though my first thought is a book-related one, which sort of proves that not everyone will like everything that a celebrated author does all of the time.

SO...has anyone read Isaac Asimov's Nemesis?

It's definitely harder to get into when you hate the person you're controlling, but I don't think it has deterred me completely from playing a game yet. Although I often find myself taking a break from RE4 when Ashely's part comes up.

Books are a different story though. I've stopped reading so many Stephen King books near the end because when he starts nose-diving randomly into fantasy I start hating everyone.

I can't stand Nathan Drake, but I play through because I admire his guts.

Unless they're intended to be assholes, I end up getting bored.

only if either you, the jeep, the animal - or all three - are on fire at the time.
