I've been hearing nothing good about the Vita and never really looked into it till a gamestop employee said there was a crazy deal on the Vita and showed me some games (Since I said I heard the game selection was crap). So like any sane nerd I went home and found a insane deal on ebay, Vita+Unit 13 (New)+8GB card (New)+Free shipping for $190.

I was nervous right after because I decided to do some reading and there's just a lot of negative stuff I see online, "There's no games", "The games aren't good" and what not. So I get it in 3 days ago and really got to get a feel for it, mind you I've never held one or seen one in person beyond the store, which was being hogged by some loud 8 year old.

Unit 13 got some mediocre reviews, and I can sort of see why, there's no connecting story. You pick a guy for a job and select 1 of 36 missions (there's remix modes on each level) and the objectives vary but it's more arcady. However what it does it does well and the missions separated the way they are work out well for a handheld. Which is funny because I recall people saying the PSP needed games that do more 'bite sized' missions or games and then when Unit 13 does it, it gets a demerit for it, okay so I'm confused what that's about.

From the Demos I've played (Stardust, Resistance, Rayman Origins, Playstation All Stars) I've been nothing but pleasantly surprised. A lot of the hate on Resistance was it was a bit too easy and the story sucked, it's a dumb shooter if you play it with that in mind it's actually pretty enjoyable, just shoot things and have a laugh it's no Timesplitters but it's worth a look.
The games work extremely well with the dual sticks and buttons are really nice as well, and the visuals are mind blowing for a handheld.

I'm getting Disgaea 3 soon (It's ETA is today anyway) and I know that was good on the PS3 and is only better on the Vita because you can do standby mode and stop playing. Which is important in Disgaea given how item world works.

In terms of apps I tried youtube and it worked really well, and even better was skype. My friend reported super smooth video (a bit grainy), clear audio and better than my bloody logitech webcam overall. And you can switch between front and rear cameras so if you want to show someone something you can just tap a button and done.

There's a drawing program that is free as well but, I've never been one to draw with my finger, one of those pens might be in order but it seems like a fun program to mess with.

Long story short:
Heard the Playstation Vita was crap, decided to try it, it's been a lot of fun.

So discussion value:
Have you ever heard nothing but negative things about a device, avoided it then when you wound up buying it/trying it you found it to be pretty damn good?

And per usual with my topics the mandatory random question:
What do you like on your pizza? I just had sausage and pepperoni.

Have hardly heard anything about it at all tbh I dont know anyone who has one and have never seen one to demo in a store, at the moment there is no reason for me to get one as generally I dont like handheld gaming and only really play if I am away for long periods of time (or at least a few weeks) which hasnt happened lately.

I think it looks ok though and has some games I am interested in but the only exclusive I care about is Gravity Rush and I dont want to buy a vita for one game. If I ever see one for about 100 pounds or less I will probably snap one up, or it gets some great games I really want ofc.

As for pizza pepperoni I suppose.

Welcome to the Vita club!

We now have 5 members! Hooray!

OT: I've never really bought things after hearing negative reviews about it, so I have little experience.

I more or less meant did you ever get convinced to get a device that you heard negative things about from friends or reviews.
Gravity Rush looked interesting though not my kind of game.

Persona 4 Golden is the only game you will need...
I keep hearing that, I have a hard time playing the Persona games on console because ...Well I often have to hop off to take care of work or my disabled mom. I keep hearing it's the best version.

I've never really avoided a product due to word of mouth alone. I always research my purchases very thoroughly while still trying to take some general opinion into consideration. The Vita was no exception.

I knew the Vita would get slack and be a bit of a slow burner, it was pretty obvious given Sonys track record with the PSP and PS3. That and no game platform every has a good first year; people seem to forget the 3DS suffered the same growing pains in its first year as well. I still bought it because I liked what it had to offer, and its great potential. It always takes at least 2 years before a platform begins to really shine, but being an early adopter means you gotta be patient.

I have loved it from day one and pretty much play every day. Got a good stack of games for it already, and looking forward to games like Soul Sacrifice, Dragons Crown, Ys: Celceta, ect... The firmware updates have been making the system progressively better to use along with the apps, and it's always great to be on party chat with friends while playing a game with them.

Also, Meat lovers pizza FTW. Just stack with full of meat, ALL OF THE MEAT!!!

There's a version of Virtue's last Reward on it. It's the sequel to the DS's 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors (although you don't need to have played 999 to enjoy VLR).

EDIT: oh wait, never mind. VLR spoils 999 story. Play 999 first, you won't regret it.

My problem with handhelds is that developers develop for handhelds. And, I don't mean that they cut back on graphics because of hardware restrictions. The games are always either pint-sized versions of full games, or are just terrible.

I do like the addition of the under-system touchpad. I'd like to see more hand real-estate but, it's a step away from touch screen gaming so I'm fine. Once you get down to it though, it's a glorified thumbstick. What are the motions you can make on a touchpad? Swipe and tap. The same can be done with a thumbstick (with less fingerprints might I add).

Sounds interesting, however I sold my DS long ago, never got into the 2 screens sorta thing. I liked GBA way more. What kind of game is it if you don't mind me asking?

That's not strictly true, there's a fair amount of GBA, PSP, and Vita games where they have a full on adventure. I mean you cant really say Uncharted is a cut down game, it's got everything you'd expect. The gimmicks typically are optional, again with uncharted you can either use the screen to navigate climbs or traditional. The Disgaea titles on the DS,PSP,PSV are actually larger than their console versions as is Persona 4. There are some games that are more bite-sized but when you play on the go that can be better.
Each to their own though!

In short description, 999 is one of those Japanese virtual book. Expect a lot of reading, with couple of choices and point-and-click puzzles throughout the story. The story is pretty well written and is interesting enough to get me hooked. Go check it out if you're into that kind of thing.

6 members actually, lol I got a vita at launch and I haven't regretted it,

OT I heard nothing but bad things about the PS3 until I got one, (still relatively early in the consoles life span) and for me this is very much a routine thing with new consoles, if they don't have a strong launch-lineup they get a lot of flak for it even after a few good exclusives turn up normally lasts about 2 years I'd estimate, so give it another year and people won't be bitching about the Vita anymore

I like Hawaiian or Greek Pizza myself.

Can't really say much good on the Vita front. It doesn't do much to make me want to replace the PSP when I have all my games and stuff.

Make sure you get PSN+.

They released a CRAP LOAD of games for Vita that are still, as of me writing this, FREE for PSN+ users.

They even released the AMAZING FFT:WotL (PSP), which can be played on the PSV (as far as I know) for free.

:D

That was pretty much my story with the PSP two years ago. Heard not the best things about it, bought it, and had a lot of fun with it. Still am.

But the Vita has a problem the PSP didn't: the explosion in mobile technology. The PSP was a fairly up to date device for years given the lack of movement with mobile devices. Even up to the second generation iPhone the PSP compared well as a gaming and movie-watching device (I have both). But now with quad core, microSD, and retina display, the Vita is yesterday's news. It already feels old.

If it plays good games that is the bottom line, but I really think we need a Vita 2 at this point.

Spinach, Mushroom, and anchovies.

I've only had a chance to try the new uncharted game on it but it felt solid and graphics seemed good. Also, with any new system it's unusual to have good games right away. It's always been like that.

The games, of which there are none, are good, but for many the main factor is the cost.

I have to agree with Tizzy. The Vita's ability to let you pause the game at virtually any location and jump right back in when you come back is great for moments like that, as long as you can remember what you were doing last, at least.

It is a pretty damn long game, though, even if you're not strictly concerned with getting all of the inconsequential fetch quests finished. So that might factor into your buying it or not, I suppose.

OT: Eh, of course everyone was saying the Vita was crap, but it didn't have an impact on me buying it or not. I waited until I could get a relatively cheap deal (Vita + Memory Card + Assassin's Creed Liberation) and then got it. So far I'd definitely say it's been worth my time and money, especially after Persona 4 Golden was released.

As for pizza, I like chicken, green peppers and/or onions, garlic, and white sauce. Well, okay, I like just about anything except olives, anchovies, and pineapple, but I prefer to have a combination of two of the above + the sauce, because it's slightly less horrible for my body than sausage/pepperoni/tomato sauce/whatever else.

I lost interest in the Vita when I saw the price of its memory cards, and the fact that you need to ship it back to Sony to change its battery.

Haha, good try Sony. But I'm not gone to let you rip me off, left and right, just because you made a PS3 portable. I once went to a Pawn Shop, the guy spotted my PSP, told me I should update to the PS Vita he just got in, said it had PS3 graphics, I just replied: "I already own a PS3".

I love Taco Pizza.

Another member of the Vita club(one day, we'll crack double digits). I got mine in August and haven't regretted it. It an excellent machine and what it lacks in quantity, game wise, it makes up in quality. So far Uncharted and Gravity Rush are my favorites with Assassin's Creed Liberation right behind. Playstation All-Stars is great for killing time on breaks at work against my one friend who owns a Vita, and some of the upcoming titles look promising(please don't cancel Bioshock. I'll be good. I promise). As to pizza toppings, I prefer a nice calzone, with meat.

I want a Vita for P4G, not much else. It's also a pretty damn sexy little handheld as well.
