Any tips on how NOT to get raped. I heard about its difficulty but damn, I'm dying BEFORE I reach the damn demons. Been in spirit mode for a long ass time. Any tips for a beginner?

PS The online multiplayer thing is hilarious, I love watching the playback of people rolling off a huge flight o stairs or getting raped by snipers.

Take your time. While that may sound simple, most ppl are used to just running up to a group of mobs thinking they'll cut'em down like a hack and slash game, but it'll just get you gang raped in this game. Also using a bow or ranged spell to lure when you see bigger groups works wonders. This game is mostly about learning mob placement and you WILL die a lot till you start learning that.

Also make sure to pick up the cling ring on the first stage, it'll give you more HP in spirit form, and will be glued to your finger for a lot of the game. And the thief's ring is pretty good too, lowering the aggro range of mobs so you don't get hit by snipers or alert others as you lure.

Keep your shield up at all times and never run into unknown areas, especially the Valley of Defilement and Tower of Latria.

But I always felt that it added to the experience when you found that out for yourself.

First time through (or at least till you get the hang of it) I would say start as the Royalty class. They have a slightly weaker spell than the Mage, but begin the game with a ring of mp regen which can really help. It wont make the individual fights easier, but you can go further without needed to scoff down (or buy) mp items.

1) when entering a new room or area, always advance with your shield up.

2) check your corners. you don't know how many times I've got into a room, only to get stabbed by a guard hiding beside the doorway.

3) be patient. wait for an opening in your enemy's defenses.

4) use magic. seriously, this one will save your ass against many many future demons.

5) when entering a new area, look at the blood stains. they can inform you about traps. (especialy in the shrine of storms level)

6) be prepared to die,.. again, and again, and again, and again.

7) If all else fails, be cautious, keep your shield at the ready, and your healing grass close by.

that's all I got, so god luck.

Yeah, true, I made it to the dragon part where you have to go along the longass bridge and the dragon keeps spewing fire along it. I keep dying b/c I have to use all my stamina running to the end then all the archers and that one jackass swordsman keep raping me. If I didn't have to run I could easily take care of them.

Ya also might wanna wear weaker armor so that you can roll properly, rolling in the game will save your ass a lot, and to be able to fully roll, your equip burden has to be less then half of your max burden. And there's nothing wrong with finding a good spot to farm some quick souls and items, then port back to the next and go back again to get some stat upgrades so you have more stamina and such.

Learn to love dodge, having less than half your equip limit makes you roll a lot faster than if you have over that mark.

I wrote a bit more extensively in this post: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.265256-Demons-Souls#10080660 in a thread from some time ago, hope it helps you. Just don't give up, stick with it and you'll have one hell of a great experience. Atleast that's what I ended up with and now it's my third favourite game of all time.

- Keep your shield up when exploring an unknown area.
- Take it slow, don't run everywhere.
- Get to know different enemies; their weapons and tactics.
- Learn to time your evasive rolls.
- Learn to parry, very useful against some enemies (like knights).
- Dodging is usually better than blocking. Try to flank and backstab.
- Lure out more powerful enemies one at a time.
- Know when to retreat, discretion is the better part of valor and cowardice is the better part of discretion.
- When enemies are too strong, try another area first.
- Pay attention to messages and bloodstains (when online). They can give useful clues.
- When you die, don't rage-rush to your bloodstain, it will only get you killed again.
- Keep healing items at the ready.
- Check your corners.
- Get to know your weapons and which are useful against which type of enemy.
- Summon allies when necessary.

Also, dying is a learning experience in this game. It's no shame to die a dozen times on the first level. Just finished my first playthrough and loved every minute of it.

(For the dragon, buy 200 arrows and get the bow on the second tower of the bridge. Take that firebreathing mofo down!)

I played the whole game in soul mode. If you don't damn bastards always come to gank your ass, I really am not a fan of their PvP system, I much prefer to have a choice in the matter. I guess you do have a choice, the choice to be gimped but not ganked or vice versa. I hope they don't do this same kind of gank system in Dark Souls!

Good idea though, I think I'm gonna play a little more DS also. I just got past the first level in NG+ using a royalty. It's been rough so far...

I can't recommend reading this wiki enough.

http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/

The massive issue I have with Demon's Souls is that you'll never actually learn what certain things are until you do research. For instance, I had no idea how to upgrade equipment with a boss Demon's soul. The game is not very newb friendly, there are a lot of things the game will never tell you.

It's not a hack 'n slash game. Play intelligently, methodically, and learn the laws of the land. Use your shield to deflect attacks and strike back when the enemy exposes themselves. Sneak up on them if the option is available. Learn how enemies fight and use that knowledge to your advantage.

Also, note the following: anything with blue eyes is strong and anything with red eyes will fuck you UP.

I second reading the wiki. Quite strongly.

Thief's Ring is a godsend for first-time players; as I learned the different levels on the second playthrough it was less so. The Cling Ring remains glorious throughout. Both are on the very first level.

The start of 4-2 is a wonderful place to farm souls.

My first "playthrough" was over 40 hours, and I didn't even beat the boss of 1-4 (I was playing on a friend's PS3.) My second one took half that time. This is a game in which it's possible to play through in under an hour with no with no large sequence breaks if you know what you're doing, and are capable of not making any mistakes.

If a boss is murdering you repeatedly, try getting help from a blue phantom. It's amazing how much more effective you are when there's another target for the boss to focus on, and - if you get a good player - most bosses can be killed in under a minute. A matter of seconds if they're particularly good.

Death isn't that bad. Once you get to 4-2, it takes no more than a few minutes to get whatever souls you need (unless you're going for max level, or a really high level before a New Game+.)

Don't use boss souls until you know what other things you can get with them.

Royalty's the best starting class for new players.

Your penguin is scaring me now...
HAHA! Man, I honestly hadn't even thought of that. What a wonderful coincidence. Thanks for the laugh; it takes the edge off a Sunday spent in the office.

Don't forget to spend your souls, no point hoarding them. If you know how you want to play you can work out what stats and weapons are good for you to improve and spend as soon as you can. Hoarded souls are only one step away from being gone for ever.

Also as soon as you can explore the other worlds. Not wanting to ruin anything but you can quickly learn which zones are great for souls, different crafting materials etc.

Every time i hear of this game its always about how hard it is.

Maybe ill get it between the releases of Portal 2 and Duke Nukem Forever.

I still find it hard to believe that any non-freeware game can get harder than God Hand. Much less the second generation of Monster Hunter titles.
