Just what IS Clock Tower?

I heard about the Clock Tower Series in Extra Punctuation and looked it up on Youtube.
What the HELL am I looking at? Part of it may be the Youtube guy's editing, but this shit is loony! It doesn't make sense, but Clock Tower 3 actually looks... for lack of a better word, interesting. For those of you who have played, do you enjoy it? Is it utterly demented in an intriguing way? This mystery is too bizarre to leave alone.

A little-known survival horror series, Clock Tower began on the SNES initially unreleased in America. Though various graphical and story changes have occurred as the series moved to Playstation, the common factors are the presence of the twisted Scissorman, your lack of real weapons and multiple endings, many of which result in your death. I hear the second has the most, and the first has 5 that I know of.

I really enjoyed the first when I finally got to play it- probably the only SNES game to make my heart pound in fright. The jury is out on the other two, particularly 3 for what I'm told is some truly abysmal voice acting/cutscenes and the main character suddenly gaining supernatural powers whereas all the previous heroines were defenseless.
