Keanu Reeves Details Third Bill & Ted's Movie

The Matrix actor squeaks out a few details about the script for a threequel to the 1989 comedy Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Excellent! *air guitar*

Along with Ferris Bueller and Dazed and Confused, 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is on my "Most Watched Shelf" of VHS cassettes that I'd be happy to play at any time. The time-bending comedy is unarguably Keanu Reeves best work as an actor, and I loved the late, great George Carlin in a rare movie appearance. But after the lackluster - but still campy and enjoyable - sequel Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey came out in 1991, and the ill-advised cartoon and live-action series were cancelled, it seemed that the burgeoning franchise was set to fade into obscurity. But here we are, 20 years after Bogus Journey was in theaters, and Keanu Reeves is still talking about a third Bill & Ted's film. The premise would once again place Keanu as Ted "Theodore" Logan and Alex Winters as Bill S. Preston, Esquire with their super-band Wyld Stallyns still trying to write the song that will save the universe - even as the rockers are deep in their forties.

Reeves told MTV recently that he has been meeting regularly with the original screenwriters - Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon - on drafting a script. "When we last got together, part of it was that Bill and Ted were supposed to have written the song that saved the world, and it hasn't happened," Reeves said. "So they've now become kind of possessed by trying to do that. Then there's an element of time and they have to go back."

That's all well and good, I suppose, but when can we expect the script to be finished. "I believe the writers are six weeks away from a draft," Reeves said. "No pressure!"

Will we really see another Bill & Ted's movie starring the original duo in their 40s? If the script's good enough, it's possible that a production company might greenlight it considering how "reboot happy" Hollywood is right now, especially with 80s IPs.

The sad part is that George Carlin won't be around to reprise his role as Rufus. Alex Winters mentioned last year [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103753-New-Bill-Ted-Movie-in-the-Works-Dudes] that it was something that he and the screenwriters lamented. "It's actually stopped us in the past - why do it without Rufus? We've been delicate about moving around him," Winters said.

I just hope they let the Rufus character die gracefully instead of casting somebody new in the role.

I think they could actually do this, the two characters would be in their forties like old rockers, it'd be interesting, shame George Carlin is no more

I actually prefer Bogus Journey to Excellent Adventure by a large margin.

I think a 3rd flick concentrating on them in their 40s could be a blast.

Same here. The sequel kicked ass.

Though, didn't the end credits to Bogus Journey already tell the story of how Bill 'n Ted's music created world peace? Somehow this just seems like another 80's nostalgia money grab. And I don't really know how much the airhead surfer dude humor will stick in today's movie market.

I think the surfer humor needs to go in favor of dissilussioned 40 year old angst.

You deal with the Bogus Journey reveal by doing a Star Trek: By revealing too much to Bill and Ted, a new quantum universe exists and world peace will have to be acheived through other means (their nerd, classic music playing children who must learn to become cool).

Course they'll have something entirely different in mind.

Thought this was a late April Fool's joke. I'm surprised. "The time-bending comedy is unarguably Keanu Reeves' best work as an actor-" really? I know he's no Phillip Seymour Hoffman but I'll go ahead and argue the "unarguable" here. His best work was probably A Scanner Darkly, and he was better even in Speed than in the Bill & Ted movies.

I enjoyed the first film when I was a kid. Then I saw Wayne's World and realized how much of a dumbed-down rip Bill & Ted really are. So it is pretty surprising that Reeves is willing to cash in on such a shameful sequel, as he doesn't do a lot of movies anyway and usually they aren't blockbuster swill (I know, I saw The Day The Earth Stood Still remake as well. I said USUALLY).

I love the first Bill and Ted and would be really interested in a third one. If they do recast Rufus, I'd think Patton Oswalt would be perfect.
