Keep steam games

So upgrading OS etc long story short I have to wipe my hard drive but I kinda dont wanna have to re download every single steam game I have (I own around 50) is there anyway I can keep my steam games on an portable hard drive or something?

Go to the tab labeled Steam on the top right corner, select Backup and Restore Games.

Not sure what that even does all I understand that it copies my game on my hard drive

It's a tool that lets you backup and restore games, pretty self explanatory really. Just select the games you want to back up, press next, click BROWSE and choose a folder (obviously that should be in an external hard drive or a USB flash drive, not the default c. Once you've installed your new OS download Steam, select Restore a previus backup and choose the folder you've put your backups in.
