yesterday i got my pc back from repairs (if it helps, my GPU was busted and a new one was required) and unfortunately win 7 64 bit had to be reinstalled and i lost everything.

so, i plugged in the cable for the internet, set it to private home network (local area connection), had no issues to reinstall all the necessary programs i need from the net. but all of a sudden after few hours, my connection got lost. when i restart my pc, i have a solid connection, but after 5 or 10 min its gone again. i know its not the modem because wifi is working fine (using a tab to type this) and all the lights are on as well. the cable is also unbroken and works fine too.

today it appears that for some odd reason it switches the network at random times. most of the time it switches to "public network" still saying unidentified network. even when i clearly set it to "private home network". every now and then it switches to "work network" and with some luck, to home network and thats when i have my connection back again. but it doesnt last for long and its back again to "public network" and no connection anymore to the internet or anything else that requires a connection.

when it switches to "home network" its name is "network 2" (i have no idea why) and when i click on it, i have the windows for "set network location" and i can select which network it should be set for "network2". and for some reason "public network" has a black frame around it and the admin emblem or sign or what ever it is called the same for "work network". when i click on "home network" all i have available is "change settings in network and sharing center" and "view or change homegroup settings".

of course the trouble shooter sees that there is a problem but cant resolve it. all it keeps telling me at the end is:
problems found

"local area connection" doesnt have a valid IP configuration.

i have no idea why it keeps switching to "public network" all the time and prevents me from having a connection. i googled around but could not find a solution to my problem.

hope i can find help here.

I'd guess it's switching to public network because while it's not connected it doesn't recognise what network it is so probably assumes it's been plugged in somewhere else until it recognises it again. Try different cable, try different ports - it sounds like a connection issue.

the problem is, i dont have a different cable. and i know the cable is fine because i tried it out on my wifes old laptop. no problem there. so the problem has to be on my pc.
so how come it cant recognize the connection?

i can try different ports on the modem. i only have one plug on the my pc so i know this cant be the issue. but is there anything i can do on win it self that it can find the right connection and actually stay connected to "home network"?

well, tried different ports. the same issue. must be win.
so, any way i can get around it?

edit:
thought i better mention that when its set to public network, it says above "unidentified network". below it it says "public network" and its not blue. so i cant click on it. bit when it switches to home, then i can click on it.
but doesnt matter what i do, after a short time it switches back to public and no connection anymore.

Well it could be a problem with the port on the computer, I've seen it happen before. That or it's a software problem in which case I suggest you google "unidentified network" and try all the things. Though the fact that it works sometimes seems to suggest a bad connection.

well, i have tried everything i found like from here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/network-connection-shows-that-it-is-connected-but/52e60042-2666-4eaf-80be-193b26db10be

of course i cant download anything since the connection doenst even last that long. so the "fix it" link is useless to me.

this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9epRBi6kF-o

only he has 2 and i only have one. which i cant do anything.

and this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDZVDYOw7x4

even when i did not have this #thing stuff in the list. instead i have "ACP user service". i did it with this instead. no success.

i also deleted bonjure and this did not resolve my problem either.
i have disabled firewall, deactivated web shield in avast. nothing.

so no one here can give me any advise? the problem still persist. i have noticed that the connection drops out as soon when i enter any websites. doesnt matter if i use firefox or explorer. with steam, origin and uplay there doesnt seem to be a problem. every now and then it keeps dropping out but after some time its back again. but as soon i enter websites, thats when i get an unidentified network.

ok, i hope someone can answer this question at least.

my problem isnt solved yet. yesterday someone came over from my provider to have a look at my problem. he exchanged the modem, checked the cable and even changed the plugs. nothing worked.
he thinks that it could be my network card (which is my motherboard only) that seems to have a problem to adjust or find the right IP address. i was thinking of getting an network adapter. cant be a PCI because i have no slot available on my small motherboard. has only one for the GPU.

so i was thinking of getting a USB ethernet adapter.
is it possible that this could resolve my problem? cant even play titanfall or other MP games without getting a dropout due my stupid network card.

If the problem is the onboard ethernet then a USB adapter would sidestep that problem, yes. Not sure whether or not this is relevant but many home routers still let you connect via USB so if yours is close enough to your computer to connect with a USB cable (or you get a particularly long USB cable) and it has that port you could go that way. Generally they use the big D shape USB connection that you see on printers.

thanks. i will give it a try then and hopefully i can surf the net without dropping out and getting an stupid "unidentified network" crap.

i just have a normal cable connection from the modem to my pc. this one adapter i saw in the shop detects WIFI as well, which the modem supports. all i have to do is just plug it in to a USB port and off i go. but it has also the lan connection. pretty much like this one i saw in the shop (which is a asus brand), just in silver colour and it detects WIFI.

well, i cant *@#$!* believe it.

got my self a asus WL-330NUL USB adapter. wireless worked really well. was able to surf on sites, even play titanfall with a very solid ping between 50-70. but here is the other problem: downloading. just downloading a game that is over 200mb big and it downloads under 100kb/s.
ok, so i plugged in the lan cable in to the adapter, worked fine at first, download was faster, surfing was no problem, but what happened; i get the same crap as before. "unidentified network". switches back to public network. no internet connection.
seriously, its like win or something is stopping me from using a wired connection.

had to switch back to wireless. seriously, WTF is going on here that a wired connection is a problem. even over a USB adapter?

Did you find a different cable to try with? You should probably still do that even if it seemed to work on the laptop.

no, since it has to be a very long cable. which my provider already supplied. and since they have checked it this week, i know its not the cable.
but also not worth it now. i will be moving sometimes next month. maybe then i can place the modem closer to my pc and get a different cable if needed. have to contact the provider for it as well to change location.

its just really frustrating that wireless works flawlessly but lan doesnt. last night i unplugged the adapter, disabled my onboard card....again... and so far it behaved. only this time i have 2 different networks in sharing center(i guess the other one would be from my adapter). i will try it out again tonight when i have more time. especially since unity will be out and i will be downloading it.
maybe i will try installing different drivers for the network card and see if this maybe solves my problem. really cant understand how this can happen.

edit:
nope, newest drivers didnt help either. have to use wifi again to even surf around.

thought i give an update here.
i was able to try out a different cable and also there i keep getting unidentified network. so i think it has to be windows. was thinking of installing win but that would be still awkward since it was installed on an empty drive.
