I have this new keyboard that whenever i am playing an FPS or any game where my movement is controlled by WASD on my keyboard, my movements are carried over.

Eg. Say i spam A and D to go side to side to strafe or whatever. I tap them repeatedly for a few seconds and then i stop tapping because i don't need to strafe any more. My character keeps moving side to side.
It is like the command i put in gets in queue instead of stopping when i want it to.

I could do this with my old keyboard and as soon as i stopped tapping my movement stopped.

If you have or have had this and know how to fix this can you please help?

Um...unplug it and restart your computer?

Ive messed around with a few different keyboards, they all seem to do mostly the same thing as the new one.

Im starting to think the problem is overheating.

Has anyone else had this problem before?

The very least you can do is tell us what kind of keyboard you have. Not all keyboards are alike.
The packaging it came with says 'Microsoft Wired Desktop 500'
Might not be that helpful, sorry.

No - actually, you didn't need to tell me. Key input lag is a notorious problem with Microsoft and Logitech wireless products in general. I've even encountered an issue with my wife's old wireless keyboard / mouse combo where you couldn't click the mouse and press in a key at the same time.

In general, wireless keyboards are the bane of a PC gamer's existence because they all suffer from exactly the same problem you describe. There's a reason why Microsoft's, Logitech's, and Razer's dedicated gaming keyboards are wired.

Well the name of the keyboard does have 'Wired' in the name. Thought I agree with your point on wireless keyboards. They are not good for gaming.

To the OP, it doesn't sound like an overheating problem, it sounds like a problem with the model of keyboard. My only suggestion is to see if there are drivers available for the keyboard, and install those. Thought I am of the opinion that drivers shouldn't be needed for a keyboard unless it's for special buttons on the keyboard. (For media, or some keyboards have extra keys you can bind.)

If that doesn't work, return, research a keyboard that is better for games and buy that.

Have you tried tweaking the key repeat rate settings in the Keyboard thingy in the Control Panel?

Might be a long shot, but shouldn't be too hard to check, and might be worth it. Esp. since you mention other keyboards do this now too.

Good luck

You're right. I don't know how I read wireless instead of wired. Maybe I need glasses after all. :)

Reep, mrjinx is most likely right: it's the keyboard. Not all keyboards are made equal, and if you really want a keyboard for gaming, you should get just that. You might not need all those macros and fancy LCD screens, but the key feature that all gaming keyboards have is "anti-ghosting". Believe me, this is just as annoying as key lag. My wife's notebook has this problem and if I press three keys, one may not register at all.

Anyhow, this site coincidentally has a great article about keyboards (and mice) on the front page right now: www.extremetech.com - start there to find your inevitable replacement.

Alternatively, you can look into dedicated FPS keypads - you keep your current keyboard for typing and browsing, and use the dedicated one for gaming. Again, aforementioned website has a number of these dedicated keypads reviewed as well.

I have the N52+ and the WolfClaw, but I still prefer my trusty Saitek Eclipse II for my FPS fun (I never see the need to use macros in games anyhow). It's the right size, it feels great for typing, it doesn't suffer from ghosting and best of all, it's cheap.

Oh man, the new year celebrations are catching up to me. I didn't read the part about other keyboards doing the same thing!

What you mention is actually quite likely to be the problem if it's happening to other keyboards as well.

ihave this new keyboard that whenever i am playing an FPS or any game where my movement is controlled by WASD on my keyboard, my movements are carried over.

Yup.. same here. On 2 seperate occassions now. I agree with all the above mentioned also but... here's what i found out plus, a newer twist on keyboard"ghosting".

I had added a wireless-logi-game pad to my hardwares to game with once and yikes! in comes the ghosting probs on my WASD inputs like you found. Looked into all kinds of info's and tried a bunch too.

Then i found my answer... it was the added wireless-controller. Almost all wireless-input devices, use pretty much the very same frequency(forgot the number that designates it)and once i unplugged and removed and battery power to the game pad the wireless-keyboard worked great! WASD inputs and all... it all whent back to normal once again for the longest time. Months and months im saying here.

However..

Now for the twist.

Since Dec.23.08 on I've switched over from a Cable ISP to a DSL ISP.. started up a FPS game and played for a week and im now ghosting all over the maps. :(
I tried a brand new CABLE-MS keyboard with USB...nothing but ghosting... tried connnecting a 3rd k/board with a P2-keyboard connection on it ... again nothing but ghosting... therefore i've now returned that "newly bought k/board" and have reinstalled and now gone back to my original MSwireless-K/board. I'm still scratching my head because all the 3 boards, the cable and wireless types are ghosting... huh!? The games are based on the "Left 4 Dead"- running on "STEAM" .. and the other is BF2(BattleField 2) that im also ghosting on.(EA games)

Now im thinking about the SP's provided DSL Wireless Modem... but, nah! Couldn't be a frequency thing with that cause the 2 wired-k/boards were ghosting too.??

I'm about ready to clean off the ol' HD and reload XP and start fresh again and just cross my fingers that the renewed installed XP files will fix my ghosting probs.

BTW... For about 2-3 days and very close to the same time as the ghosting... i was running my comp a bit hot cause .. DUHHHHHH.. i had by accident reinstalled my exhaust fan backwards and the comp was running a little extra warm for a few days.

Still thats been fixed now and yes, im still ghosting on my favorite FPS maps and games.

So there you have it. A possible solution and yet a new twisted version to those same symptoms.

Anyone got any solutions and ideas here??
