Okay, first off: let me just say that I have yet to play a Kingdom Hearts game I didn't like. Technically, there hasn't been a numbered Kingdom Hearts in several years, but Birth By Sleep is easily on par with KH 1 and 2, and Days had a new emphasis on characters I liked and what I thought was the most emotional story of the series. I haven't been anywhere near angered by any of the "spinoffs" Then I discovered Recoded.
Recoded is the latest DS game in the series, and is so blatantly unoriginal I want to stab someone in Square Enix. Technically this is a sequal to KH2, yet you play as KH1 Sora in a data version of Jiminy's journal in order to figure out the meaning of a mysterious message Jiminy didn't write. This means every world in the game is from KH1, some of which you're visiting for the fourth and fifth times. The battle system is Birth by Sleep's but with less variety. There is not a single new character or world in the game. The story is basically Chain of Memories, but now with data. And it turns out that the big reveal was already revealed in Birth By Sleep's secret ending. Find it on Youtube and save some money.
To be fair, the leveling system is sort of new, and some of the worlds have segments where you play in a 2d side scroller, an RTS, and a turn-based RPG in the coliseum. And the gameplay would probably still be fun to entertain me if I did decide to buy the game, but only because it's the same stuff I've been enjoying, with little innovation. Normally I welcome the "don't fix what isn't broken" mentality, But Recoded is just pointless and ridiculous.
