Kids like this are the reason why if I have kids I'll have them start off with a Nintendo emulator and work up through to a PSX as they before dumping it for late 90s PC games in their mid teens like I did.

They're reacting the same way to a Gameboy as someone who's 30 years old today would've reacted to an Atari 2600 or Intellivision at that age.

You assume everyone is fixated on the latest and greatest, which is sadly what they seem to be stuck on these days. A lot of people just like playing with technology period and playing with older stuff for the fun of it.

You're talking to a guy who discovered his brothers old Atrai 2600 in the Genesis/SNES era and played it whenever he could get someone else to play the plane/tank competitive game.

I find this quite interesting too, because I personally didn't have the chance to play NES nor very much SNES or GENESIS when I was young. In fact my first big console was N64 and when I was 16 I finally was able to play SNES again and liked it so much that I went back to NES when I was 18. Then I played Super Metroid and found it to be my favorite game of all time. And the technology there didn't hinder my experience at all. In fact I still love 2D games.

Ironically all this video did was prove that our consumer culture's indoctrination of children to teens is still working to this day. Shaping them into adults who always desire more and better. I certainly put no blame on the children as it's been heavily documented in psychology that these children have little to no control as they are still learning and adapting to the environment around them. Its just this social system we have, sadly.

To be fair, 10 years ago it was a big accomplishment to have been born in the 80's, it made you better than other people... 10 years from now being born in the 00's will be the big accomplishment, then 10 years after that it will be folks born in this decade..... It is just the way of the world, when you become the generation that is in its 20's and early 30's you are the target demographic for marketers and as such you are "cool" That is just the way of the world.

Their reaction makes sense. It wasn't made for their generation - They have smartphones, PS Vita and the 3DS - all of which can play Gameboy games much better than the original Gameboy via emulation or re-releases along with current games.

The original Gameboy wasn't very appealing to me as a kid. I only got a Gameboy Color to play Pokemon and only after that I realized its potential.

I think that Doom is a gaming masterpiece but I wouldn't be butthurt if some kid would say he'd much rather play CoD.

I watched this video about a week ago, and every reaction seemed pretty normal to me (except for that one kid that would "throw it in the trash." That kid was being a little spoiled) I just think they should have had them play a game like Kirby's Dream Land, or Super Mario Land, instead of Tetris. I would've said they should've gone with a SNES instead of a Game Boy, but watching my 8 year cousins attempt to play Super Mario World, I think I would rather avoid that pain.

As someone who's only a few years older than the oldest kids on that show, the first Game Boy game I owned was Kirby Dream Land, and I was like ten. This was after I played Kirby's Adventure, Kirby Super Star, and Kirby Super Star Ultra. And, although I thought (and still think) that it's a fun game, it definitely felt kind of weird playing it, because pretty much every Game Boy game (except Tetris, or other puzzle games) feels outdated, unlike many SNES games.

Actually, perhaps they should've played a SNES game. Now, when they hear people talk about old video games, they'll of "stupid Tetris crap" instead of, say, Megaman X.

Also, the Game Gear was the one that drained batteries like an electric leech -- I had a third party rechargeable battery pack that could be used for either that claimed a 14 hour life for GameBoy, and a 3 hour life for Game Gear. Given how long regular batteries would last in a Game Boy by comparison, I'm not sure how you were actually supposed to be able to play a Game Gear on batteries at all.

I dunno if I agree with the sentiment that kids now naturally wouldn't get what was good about the Gameboy. I'd give individual child personality some credit here. For my own 90's kid self, when I, already owning an N64 and a PS1 at the time, encountered an old Atari 2600 in an after-school program, I was STOKED to play it (never got the chance though). I think the reason why is because at that point, I knew I enjoyed video games, not just any game. Best graphics or pixel art, it was new if I hadn't played it before... -holds back the nostalgia wave-

Most kids enjoy play and play video game by some extension, but see how many of those kids will hang onto those iPads they're so accustomed to years down the road for the games.

I did treat board games pretty badly back then, though.

Just because there was something leechier doesn't mean GameBoy wasn't a leech. And GameGear at least has the excuse of having much better hardware.

I wouldn't say it's an accomplishment... however...
I was born in 85, and my generation has the distinction of being the last generation of the old world. Almost at the exact time we were all moving onto college, cell phones EXPLODED, the internet EXPLODED, and the world seemed to become a very cynical, jaded place due to post 9/11 anxieties and frustrations.

Looking back on the 90's for me is like looking back on a time when everything was just... better, even though it was crappy in comparison to the INCREDIBLE technology of today.

I mean, when I was a kid, I DREAMED of owning something like a GoPro - a mini camera I could take anywhere and watch a (almost) live feed from another screen. Now that I have one, I love it, surely I do, but... I kinda think I was happier prior to the Facebook, YouTube and social media boom. Back when, if I wanted to see a friend, I called their house and had to greet their parents first, or hell just rode my bike over and knocked on the door. I feel like those days are mostly over for a lot of people, and that's sad to me.

Proud to be a 90's child? No, wouldn't say that... I just wish kids today got to experience some of the more character building things we had to deal with.

But I suppose that every generation says the same thing.

Pretty much, I was born in 1969. Mine is the last generation to remember a time when there weren't computers and video game consoles in the home, where kids were actually expected to go out and play with their friends instead of park themselves in front of the television with a video game.

And my dad was born before television, so he was the last generation which didn't park themselves in front of the television all day and went out and actually played with his friends.

And I'm sure I have a grandfather who was a kid before radio and he was the last generation who didn't park themselves in front of a box and actually had to go out and play with his friends.

If your vehicle crumples it effectively acts like a cushion, albeit a rather unconventional one, spreading the deceleration over a longer period of time. Which modern cars are specifically designed to do.

So yes, I'm sure tanky old cars would come out of an accident looking in better shape than modern bubble cars. But the people driving them, not so much.

Modern cars tend to not treat your legs as crumple zone.

From a programming perspective, the gameboy game was quite the feat to pull off. I don't care what anyone says, programming anything in assembly is NOT FUN.

I took up an assembly language course on the 8086 architecture recently, and I concur with this statement. The mind boggles to think that even the more recent Game Boy Advance had just a 16.8Mhz CPU and less than half a Megabyte of RAM, and they fit entire worlds in those.

Hell, I still have trouble with the nostalgia people have for eight bit. The games were mostly of poor quality with bad controls partially orchestrated to artificially extend play time.
