I just loved how they used the line "Fear is freedom! Control is liberty! Contradiction is truth!" It's a quote from George Orwell's 1984, which was used both at the start of episode 1 and episode 18. It's associated with the idea of "doublespeak" or "doublethink." What impressed me is how they managed to make this line mean completely two different things, it's doublespeak on a meta level!
The first time you hear it, the show is basically saying "this society is fascist, and Satsuki is obviously the evil overlord villain of the show!" The second time you hear it, now that the audience has full context on the situation, it means almost the exact opposite. It perfectly describes and justifies Satsuki's actions so far, and sets her up as the hero of the story! Good job on that Trigger.
Best episode yet. Holy shit, there was more shock and awe in this one episode than most series have in their entire runs. Watching Satsuki, who has planned this day since she was only 5 years old, get beaten to a bruised and bloody pulp was extremely hard to watch. You could see that Ragyo was getting off on beating the shit out of her daughter, and just before taking back Junketsu, she just HAD to do one more bad touch (in public) to further humiliate her. You may have noticed that when Ragyo through Satsuki into the concrete walls, the scene was shot and framed in the EXACT same way as the part in episode 1 where that No Star thief got thrown into the wall by Gamagoori. How the mighty have fallen... I'd also like to point out: Junketsu means Purity, and Ragyo stole Junketsu from Satsuki. Yeah.
The sister reveal was kinda-sorta predictable, but as always, the execution was fantastic. Seeing Ryuuko being experimented on as a newborn child, only to "die" (apparently not) and get thrown in the trash was shocking. This show is getting to Spec Ops: The Line levels of "art isn't always comfortable." Hopefully Ragyo doesn't do... Ragyo things to her next episode. I really hope not. She is the worst parent I can think of, even compared to Gendo/Yui Ikari or Medusa. Also, Ragyo stealing Ryuuko's heart on Valentines Day? Oh lawd, Trigger.
I counted no more than FIVE Metal Gear Rising visual references. MGR in my KLK? Two of my favorite things!
