The raid was always a gross abuse of power and everyone involved should have refused their orders in protest and demanded a simple warrant be served and nonviolent means.

If I ever get DotCom rich, you can bet I'll install floor traps in my house so any power hungry intruders get the shock of their life when they learn they can't shoot their way out of a pit fall, as they scream into the twisting darkness. It'd be all Metal Gear and the raid commander could be all "Snake? Snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake!"

If europe had been smart they would have told the FBI and the USA to take a hike and done their own arrest with their own warrants if there was a case there.
I'd like to note here that New-Zealand is almost perfectly opposite Europe on the globe.
sorry i knew that somewhere in my brain, had a buddy from nz in an online game years back, just more used to our side mucking off in europe or mexico most of the time, but with the whole crackdown since obama took office they been globe hopping all over to flex their muscle, these raids been going on for a few years now, this seems by far and away the most over the top one of the lot, tho i have to admit i am not wholly familiar of all the events surrounding the earlier waves of raids.

No flash-bangs or tear gas? Doesn't sound very American to me.

As to WHY...the police never know exactly how the suspects will react.

So let me get this straight:

Using a special forces helicopter is adequate and tactical kit is not? The amount of logic in this case thus far has truly been outstanding in how little there is. I mean, you pay more for helicopter fuel than to don some guys in bulletproof vests (which you much likely own already; and yes, I know tactical kit is more than bulletproof vest, just illustrating a point).
Ah, governments, always spending more than what is needed and then wonder where this national debt comes from.

That is not to say the whole raid is not logic defying, but that has been discussed enough.

Ugh... Sure, piracy is illegal, but Dotcom only made a website which offered file storage. What people stored in there might have been illegal, but Dotcom himself didn't actually upload all that illegal data there. It's controversial subject, but I don't see Dotcom as the criminal here really.

But oh boy, do the police themselves seem criminal here. That whole event was completely ridiculous... How come rapists and bank robbers and the like can get away with two or in some more dangerous situations, with 5 regular policemen dressed in combat gear, when a single obese nerd gets a whole army of them after him... Geez. "Well" spent tax money I'd say.

But you see guys, it's all OK, we do live in free countries after all. We all still have rights. It's for our own good.

Well, sometimes it's just super duper necessary that we don't have rights, like if you're a British citizen who never committed a crime on US soil (and under British law, you committed no crime), but the US wants to sentence you to jail time anyway.

And it should be obvious that you have to surrender your rights if, say, a bunch of corrupt and incompetent politicians decide to enforce US copyright law on everyone by punishing website holders for piracy and giving outrageous amounts of internet control over to companies. Duh.

Or, *cough*, if the government really, really needs to conduct an illegal raid in a foreign country where no law has been broken, and needs to illegally steal remove evidence, all to stop one filesharing website, well then, it should be self-evident that you don't have rights if that were the case.

Or, if the US military just has an inkling that they might dislike you, you may be a terrorist suspect. If that happens, for whatever reason, it's for everyone's benefit that you can be indefinitely detained in US military custody (including Guantanamo Bay, which is also fine and for your own protection) without trial, lawyer, or even being charged.

But it's all OK, because we live in "free" countries.

Schmitz may be a dick with his insider trading and whatnot, but I actually liked and used Megaupload, fast and easy to use.
I'm on Megauploads side for now, the FBI and the police really botched this one.

I bet the judge for this case is going to just drop the charges before it even goes to trial, considering how BADLY they messed this up, and lawsuits for false arrests/excessive force.

And a drugs raid near me consisted of 3 guys and a dog. Maybe it was the end of the accounting year and they needed to use up the rest of the budget.

This case was sketchy just on paper, but the execution has just been terrible. They seem to have made mistakes at every turn, and turned a high profile arrest into a PR nightmare.

I think it's an absolute shambles how such an ignoramusly huge, expensive, and ugly house got planning permission in such a beautiful area? Seriously? That had got to be a staggering volume of brown paper envelopes floating around the council offices to get that passed, it's an absolute disgrace.

They just don't want to admit that they heard German Pirate and automatically assumed he was a Nautical Nazi engaging in Nefarious acts. (Too be fair, I hear they're quite common these days!)

Oh lord, reading the Youtube comments I've been reminded of the only thing dumber than the people organising this raid.

Here's andycf87's thought's on politics:

"NOPE actually the left has been causing the vast majority of the problems of the last couple hundred years. Look at National Socialism in Germany.... aka NAZIS... Then there were the millions who starved to death under communist regimes (which is just advanced socialism) you are the ignorant one because the left has brainwashed you"
Yep, Hitler the communist.

Jeeze this is like something out of American Dad! or South Park. It is so overboard that it seems satirical. What an absolutely gross use of power here, the authorities presiding over this should be ashamed.

yes he did
among others insider trading and embezzlement. he invested in a broken company, announced his intentions to invest 50 million and pulled all his money after a few days. The guy is a grade A dick and has always been, he is not some kind of noble misunderstood businessman who only wanted to help people distribute linux and term papers and shit, he knew there was money in it for him when turning a blind eye to piracy so he did.
and yes i totally support one fat fuck being arrested by a whole army, that's why it saddens me that the fuckups done by both US and new zealand authorities will not have any consequences on the way the US acts.

Er, it was only a website. Which other people used. Not his fault entirely. Sending a whole force? That's equivalent to someone going ahead and torturing government employees for the lulz and getting 5 years in jail. Very. Fucking. Disproportionate.

and this is why we need an irony font.
of course the whole raid was completely out of proportions and they didn't even have any legal grounds for everything and it was only about breaking the economic back of the company(btw you should read everything is prosecutor in this case is saying why they are not giving the money back, scary AND funny). doesn't change the fact that dotcom is scum.

in other news: when sunbathing in russia you may have to deal with a bunch of tanks driving across the beach
