There has been a lot of talk about how kinect is useless and not any good for serious gaming.

Who cares? Think about this, MS has managed to bring ?contollerless control? into the mainstream. Even if the system fails on the gaming market, the sheer prevalence of it means that this kind of technology could very easily become part of the wider, non-gaming market.

In a few years ? assuming that your home becomes even more networked, which I see as a high probability - a kinect style interface could become an integral part of it. Sensors could be placed in your living and bed rooms and could allow you to control various things in other rooms.

Imagine being able to walk into your home after work and with a simple gesture turn on half a dozen gadgets at once.

The technology is there and now that MS has brought it into the mainstream we could see it become more and more common.

thoughts?

It's already possible to do this stuff, it just isn't because it costs too much, it's too much trouble to set up, and there's no real reward for doing so. I already turn on gadgets with a gesture by hitting a switch, what special magic do sensors offer?

i cant really see gesture activated electronics but i can see voice activated electronics to be the future. humans naturally go weith the path with the least resistance/ effort and doing a whole dance routine to turn on the fan, your tv, and a light seems more time/ energy consuming than just saying "tv on" or any other derivation.

i also firmly believe that these peripherals used in gaming are also a fad. gaming has always been about relaxing the body and straining the mind. adding motion controls makes the gamer get off their ass and essentially work out when gaming has always been a relaxing activity. i believe that these peripherals will eventually die out (but not completely) and we will revert to gaming with controls due to their ability to simplify actions and their ability to respond according to how we would want them to

EDIT: now that i think about it i guess motion activated electronics could work but i still think voice commands would be more efficient due to the fact they would only need voice recognition rather than a motion system throughout the entire house. i guess motion sensors could be an optional secondary command structure for those who are mute/ deft/ trying to stay quite
