Kinect Only Costs $56 to Make

Technicians at UBM TechInsights took apart Microsoft's Kinect unit and determined that all of its parts are only worth a little under a third of the retail price.

UBM TechInsights is a firm that breaks down electronics into its components and figures out a Bill of Materials or BOM of how much each of those components costs. UBM then writes a detailed "teardown report" and sells that information for a hefty price to tech firms to get a sense of what its competitors are up to. It's all standard business, but the findings from UBM's teardown report on Kinect is raising a lot of eyebrows. Kinect is on sale in many stores for $149.99 right now, but UBM believes that the chips, cameras and microphones in the unit cost a grand total of $56. For those of you wondering and are too lazy to subtract on your own, that's a profit of $93.99.

Allan Yogasingam from UBM did praise the technology of the Kinect, especially the components provided by Isreali chipmaker PrimeSense, from which $17 of the $56 is attributed. "Basically, the strength of the design is the huge design win for the Israeli fabless company PrimeSense," he said. "They've provided the most innovative portion of the Kinect with their image processor, audio and video interface."

The report also noted that Kinect has far-reaching applications. "The future applications of this technology could be fascinating," Yogasingam said. "I can see this being incorporated into televisions - allowing users to chang the channel by waving their hand, essentially replacing the remote control."

It's worth noting that the $149.99 price tag also goes towards developing the technology and manufacturing it, not to mention the loss leader [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104479-Microsoft-Spending-400-Million-on-Kinect-Launch]?

Well, I guess you get Kinect Adventures!. Yay! That's totally worth the 90 bones. Nevermind. My bad.

I heard this earlier today. I like how they could charge only $100 and would still be making a $44 profit and would sell more. Especially since they said they were going to keep it under $100 bucks, and they damn well could have. I also realized that the reasoning behind their removal of the processor for the unit was less about "keeping the price down" and more about making a huge profit.

Great story. I hope this prompts a price drop and then I'll pick one up.

i thought it looked cheap, but if gamestop is right that wont matter since it will apparently outsell the competition, i guess those 400 millions weren't wasted.

The gamer in my is shouting
'M$ are charging a shit tonne more for a product than is really necessary? Nothing new there.'

The student in me however, is saying
"Hey, business is all about cost-benefit decisions, it's economics 101."

[sub]They're still douchebags though...[/sub]

I don't know if anyone here at the escapist cares because I don't think anybody is going to buy it.

So... what exactly? The device retails at 66% profit. That's a pretty standard pricing structure in any industry. How much do you think it costs to maken an IPhone, or any other expensive electronic device? Hell, how much do you think it takes to produce a can of coke? This is hardly extortionate by any stretch of the imagination!

I've seen many an episode on Dragons Den where they bring in some fancy invention of theirs and it costs £5.49 or whatever to manufacture, and they'll sell it to retailers for thrice that, and then the retailers will then sell it on for double again.
Device costs $56 to make and sells for $150, this seems to be a pretty standard increase. Im fairly certain around 60% profit is standard.
They then have to recoup research/development/manufacturing and marketing costs.
It also comes with a game.
They sold the 360 console at a loss to begin with and made losses for the first 3 years and its only now are they making profits.
They will still have to sell over 4 million kinects to recoup the marketing costs alone.

How dare a company sell something for profit!!
