Only now are they selling this thing not bundled with a toy?
What took them so long?

Microsoft Employee 1: Hey Microsoft Employee 2 remember that big dumb thing that we made people buy with the Xbox One that always watched you, that no one liked and we eventually had to take out.

Microsoft Employee 2: I sure do Microsoft Employee 1

Microsoft Employee 1: Lets update it and see if this big dumb thing will sell on it's own separately for PCs

Microsoft Employee 2: Excellent idea Microsoft Employee 1 now lets go back to smokin crack

I know most people dont like Kinect but comparing it to a regular webcam? Are you guys fucking insane, even the rather crappy original Kinect did a lot of cool and usefull stuff years ago that webcams now still cant do so yeah, you may not want it but a lot of people do.

It's like everyone has suddenly forgot about all the cool things people were doing with Kinect for PC the last time Kinect came out for pc, this is probably because everyone hates Microsoft more nowadays...
Why wouldnt the people doing these kind of things want an updated version.
I think that this is about all they can realistically hope for. General consumers have clearly indicated that they didn't want the damn thing when it added $100 to the xbone, I doubt they're going to want it for $200...

Now... if say you had a access to a research fund for robotics or somesuch, I can see it being snapped up by the same people being inovative with the last one.

PC users: "Uh thanks but we already have microphones, webcams, and touch screens...."

Maybe because it still has the reliability and accuracy of narcoleptic homing pigeon with no sense of direction. And even when it does work you're just playing a mediocre game held back by having to use motion controls that are not even close to being as functional as using a controller.

Motion controls (along with voice controls and 3D) are overpriced gimmicks with niche appeal and use. One day we may have the holo-deck from Star Trek but until then the Kinect and it's ilk are big expensive paperweights.

I worked very hard during my youth to not shift my body to the right when I turn right in a racing game, now I see it's not in vain, I can avoid shitty overpriced products like this.

People aren't using the Kinect on pc to play games.
Microsoft brought out the Kinect for PC due to people demanding it and at the time everyone applauded them...
They can be used as a cheap alternative to usually very very expensive technology

That's quite interesting. I like the idea of a new way to interact with a computer, providing that there are programs that make use of it in such a way that it's better or more intuitive than just using the mouse, particularly considering the cost for such a specific device. It could have interesting applications (no pun intended).

All that said, aren't Kinects designed to work from somewhere between 4'-8' away? If so, how can it work on PCs where most users are 2'-3' away from their screens.

What, so we'll have to have 4²m of space around our computers? That'll happen.

The peripheral will work with voice- and gesture-based applications for Windows, but users can't speak to Windows with Kinect.

Like seriously, my blanking headset can do that. What excuse is there for this?

"Revolutionize"? The Kinect only revolutionizes jokes on the internet not aimed at teen pop stars. The market for this is tinkerers and researchers who don't care about fluffy advertizing points. Stop wagging your investors, MS.

Kinects are awesome for tinkering.
However, why get a new, higher price one with limited functionality when xbox one-owners are getting rid of theirs for 50?
Exactly what I was thinking. There were already people hacking the kinect 2 to get PC drivers working for it. M$ should have just released a SDK for the Xbone version then released this one far later for the researchers that can't get/don't want to get a used(haha yeah, "used") xbox kinect. It sure would have helped the xbone market since early adopters wanting to get rid of that spy cam they were swindled into buying would have a demanding market of tinkerers to sell to and the xbox owners could have enough money to get another game. This is M$ just being a stupid business again and trying to make a quick extra buck and save face by saying "no one wants rid of their old kinect, so buy our Windows version."

Ah ha ha ha... Oh Microsoft, still trying to sell your irrelevant, over-priced products. Seriously though, this would almost be cute if it weren't so despicable.

As much as I want to rip MS on this, I'll wait and see how they actually try to sell it. Push it as a mass consumer device... yeah laugh harder! For something to sell to hobbyist and enthusiasts though it could be a great product. Clicking on the link for it the latter seems to be what they're going for?

I... uhh... Microsoft, please look up the definition of "insanity."

Just... stop. At this point, it's just sad. The Kinect was a failure. Let it go already. There's a very, very, VERY niche market for these things.

Pricing aside...

The Kinnect was a joke on xbox because there wasnt a lot to take advantage of it. On PC I expect it to be much much more successful. Noted all the PC gamers here rolling their eyes at having it come there way, but here's the catch: I dont expect it to be more successful with gamers. I expect it to be more successful on the platform, with tinkerers, app users, and people looking to see what they can do next with the system.

SO yeah, Im sure this specific gaming orientated forum will laugh it up, but I really do think there will be a market for this on the PC. If the price comes down.

I can see this as a good move, in time with windows I'm guessing it will have full kinect support and there will be some games that is will be useful with. I would consider it in time, my wife loves kinect for the dancing games and such. Perhaps we'll start to get some good indie titles that work with kinect and it improve greatly in time.

What the hell is the point if you can't control Windows with it? So Microsoft creates an advanced multi-purpose motion sensing and voice input device, and it can't do things in Windows.../facepalm

Removing the Kinect makes the XBox1 cost $100 less, but the peripheral on it's own costs £200 for PC? How does that work exactly?
It's called "Microsoft still thinks you're stupid". The whole Xbone thing didn't teach them you aren't stupid, because the message they seemed to have learned is "People want it, but we didn't package it well enough".

It's the problem with believing your own marketing. The problem isn't that the product sucks or isn't worth the price, it's that they aren't selling it the right way.

You know, putting their hardware and making it more compatible with other devices is a very good thing. Kinect hacks have produced some very cool things for cheap costs. Officially putting it out there with an SDK will really enable the device to show it's full potential. This should have happened with the kinects release. I'm glad to see they are making their products more accessible for a change.
