So as we all know there will be a Kingdom Hearts 3 finally. My question/concern though is what about all those handheld titles we had after 2. You have 4 games inbetween KH2 and KH3. They are KH re:coded, KH 358/2 days, KH Birth by Sleep, and KH Dream Drop Distance. Thats alot of story that takes place "between" 2 and 3. My question is how is 3 going to address it? Will we get a little review of everything before the start of 3? Will they ignore it?

So what do you guys and gals think?

Well I guess that's what the HD remixes are going to be for. The first ones already including 358/2 Days to help people catch up and I imagine that's what the second HD remix will hopefully do with Birth by Sleep or re:Coded, though really, who gives a shit about re:Coded.

Also KH:DDD had recaps of the previous games so I wouldn't be surprised if KH3 did the same

Here's the thing. To the best of my knowledge, only one of those games takes place after Kingdom Hearts 2. Dream Drop Distance, if I recall correctly, was the only one that continued the story. I don't own a 3DS, so I can't say for sure, so I'm not really going to touch on that. Those other three though...

Re:coded added nothing. It was basically a retelling of Kingdom Hearts or something like that. Same worlds, same characters, same plot on a lot of those worlds. Sora got trapped in a computer if I remember right, or it was an A.I. of him. At least, I think so. I never played that one either, but I know that it didn't continue the story, or really even expand on it.

358/2 days does not take place after Kingdom Hearts 2. In fact, it's a prequel to that game. It tells the story of Roxas and how he came to join Organization XIII, became friends with Axel and Xion, and ended up being captured by Riku and thrown into that VR that he's in at the start of Kingdom Hearts 2. It expands on that extended cut ending in Kingdom Hearts, but it does not continue the main storyline. It's a side story that you can safely skip unless you want to know more about Roxas. I personally enjoyed the game myself, but it was much like Chain of Memories: in between and fills in small story points, but nothing too major.

Birth By Sleep is a prequel. I own the game, but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. However, I do know that it takes place before Kingdom Hearts and sets up the events that lead into the first game, such as the 'soul' that Sora and Roxas share.

So, none of those games take place between 2 and 3, except maybe the first two. You can bet though that they aren't major stories, but little side notes. That's why the fans are so excited about an actual Kingdom Hearts 3 game. It will finally continue the main storyline instead of rehashing old ideas and characters and telling stories that, while interesting, don't actually move the plot along. It's like getting fun DLC packs for a game (like Mass Effect 2), versus getting the next actual game in the series (like finally releasing Mass Effect 3).

As for what they'll do with all this story, I think it's going to be set on the shelf. There may be some call backs here and there--a cameo, or a name drop in a sentence--but I'm betting that this is going to be the start of a whole new adventure. Remember, there were call backs in Kingdom Hearts 2 to Chain of Memories, but the game didn't waste any time trying to catch you up on CoM's events beyond a little blurb in the journal.

Re;Coded takes place in between the end of KH2 (the game part, right after Sora and Riku get back to Destiny Island) and when they get the letter from Mickey.

KH3 is going to be the end of the Xehanort saga. Everything that has happened (BBS, Days, Re:Coded, DDD) will have a conclusion in it (at least that's what we've been promised). As such, it will probably heavily reference the previous games (hell, DDD did it, too, enough that they felt the need to include a recap of every game).

At the beginning of Dream Drop Distance (the most recent game on the 3DS) you came across little summaries of every KH game to date that gave you the essential information to know what was going on and who the main players are. So I imagine they'll do much the same in KH3. It's all considered canon, and they certainly won't ignore it, but they'll package it in such a way that players who missed those won't be completely lost.

From what I figure certain games can be safely skipped without missing out on much.

358/2 Days: Tells Roxas' story and how he came to be a part of Organization XIII. While it's nice to get backstory on the Organization and it's members it's ultimately skippable.

Re: Coded: From what I've heard this can be skipped completely because it doesn't add much if anything at all.

Birth By Sleep: This one's iffy. On one hand it fleshes out Xehanort as a character a bit and goes into events that occurred ten years before the original KH, which led to KH happening in the first place. Great for lore junkies, but I suppose you could skip it with minor repercussions.

The one game I wish I was able to play, but I won't get a 3DS for just one game, was Dream Drop Distance because from what I've heard some pretty story significant events happened in that one. I don't suppose anyone could list off said events here in this thread could they? I don't plan on actually playing the game myself, I just want to know what to expect in KH3.

As best as I can remember:

Sora and Riku take the keyblade mastery exam to become Keyblade Masters in preparation for a possible Keyblade war

This requires them to travel trough dream worlds

They are hounded by Xehanort and Xemnas the whole exam

Sora and Riku are simultaneously confronted by Young Xehanort and Xemnas

Sora ends up in the town that never was and encounters Roxas, who transfers all his memories and feelings into Sora before vanishing, leaving Sora confused and aggravated

It turns out the exam was an EXTREMELY convoluted plan by Master Xehanort to get Sora to become his new host (explained better in 358/2 days) That I REALLY DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO EXPLAIN. Think Inception...

Sora is trapped in his own heart or something...

Mickey, Donald and Goofy want to help Riku save Sora

Lea (who is Axel) reveals the plan to Yen Sid, after remembering a promise he made to Roxas (he'd always come back for him)

Lea starts learning how to wield a keyblade but has, so far been unable to materialize his

Riku and Co. (including Lea) successfully rescue Sora (duh?)

Sora is unconscious, his heart is corrupted by the darkness (or something to that effect)

Riku enters his heart to confront the darkness to try to rescue him

He defeats the darkness

Riku encounters a copy of Ansem the Wise in Sora's heart, I believe he hands Riku something, but I don't recall what or if it was important

Riku becomes a Keyblade master, but not Sora (though Sora's pretty cool with it)

Lea finally materializes his own Keyblade

Sora leaves to hug some cute Dream Eaters :3

The unlockable ending, Yen Sid starts training Kairi to wield a keyblade
