The fans of Kingdom Hearts are the most critical of the story, and yeah they (partially me) know it's a giant pile of contrivance and whatthefuckisgoingon-ary. But then I step back and remember I am playing the mutated lovechild of Final Fantasy and Disney and that Donald duck is currently attempting to not heal me until I nearly die.

So yeah everyone is well aware that the series is flawed, if they're not then...they're too far gone. There is no hope there.

i have like 3 KH games. I bought them without playing any other because the hype drew me in. I've played the first one, thought it was complete ass. The lead character handles like crap as well, platforming with him is a complete joke.

And space battles? really? like... fucking really? the whole magic and draw of the game was so lost for me when it got to that point, everything should have been on islands in a single world. And why did the ship look like it was pulled straight out of Starfox? Complete ass.

I don't think anyone would call it perfect. The critic scores aren't that high. It's just got a very devoted following because it taps into 2 other very devoted followings.
Completely agree with the story though, it's one of the biggest stumbling blocks for me too. They really should've gone the Final Fantasy route and made each game completely independent of the last.

As someone who loves KH, it sure as hell isn't perfect. Anyone who says it's perfect is a damn liar. KH1 is a little clunky, KH2 is bloated as fuck (takes about 5 hours before you hit your first Disney world, and 3 of those initial hours are tutorial with an entirely new cast), CoM's combat isn't for everyone, 358/2 Days should've been an OVA, BBS is padded as hell, ReCoded didn't need to exist, and 3D's story only really happened in the last 30 minutes. Even the good games have a lot of flaws, but as a franchise it still remains charming. Cheesey? Of course, but still charming.

And not to mention the lore after the first game. Holy hell the lore...

Ok, so the main antagonist was Ansem. But nope, he's not Ansem. The real Ansem is an old guy. First game's Ansem is actually the heartless of Xehanort, who's nobody is also called Ansem but is mixed up with a letter "x" slapped in there. But Xehanort isn't actually Xehanort but is actually Terra. But he's not really Terra, but a guy called Xehanort.

TLDR

Confused? Learn your lore, you scrub!

Hell no it's not perfect. It's a train wreck of ret-cons.

And I say this as a big fan who is really looking forward to KHIII.

Any game that has the first two hours being nothing but a "find the thing in an obscure location" quest that game is far from perfect.

Kingdom Hearts is nowhere near perfect.

The first game had annoying control issues and token space combat, though the second game did a lot to bolster those. The second game did nothing whatsoever to solve the fact that the story and premise is a convoluted, fanfictiony mess that I lack either the wherewithal or motivation to fully grasp, and that the dialogue regularly vacillates between the cryptic and the cringeworthy, though sometimes manages to find a middle ground and be both.

And I have never loved another game series in quite the same way.

Looking at the comments and thinking back on some games I truly loved, I don't think anyone's really looking for a perfect game. Perfect games don't win the love of players. The ones that do achieve these vocal fanbases are the ones that do a particular thing or two so darn well that all its flaws are easily overlooked. If it doesn't have any serious flaws, then that's just a bonus. One could write a short story composed of all the flaws and bugs Witcher 3 has, but the things the game accomplished were so amazing that people still praise it as game of the year.

I'm pretty sure they are hearts has been the same since the first game. They were called heartless because they had no emotion, according to an ansem report in the first game. KH is a convoluted mess, but the heartless themselves aren't really an issue.
Yeah, and it was convoluted in the first game too. It's not a major issue, but convoluted none the less. I just don't see why something made of hearts should be called 'heartless' no matter how they act. The Emotionless, I could get behind, or The Unfeeling, or The Cold-Hearted, or anything to mean lacking emotion, but The Heartless is probably the worst descriptive title for something made of hearts.

Also Nobodies clearly have bodies. They also have personalities and names so I'm not sure what they're complaining about anyway.

I think the lore, world building, and setting is pretty awesome; not many games really focus on metaphysics AND nostalgia like KH does. The characters are great too. KH's only real problem is the story's various subplots. I think it's a solid series that just needs to stop focusing on handhelds and revamps.
