He has a point, Japanese companies rarely make games like Left 4 Dead. Actually I can't even think of a single Japanese FPS game.

Metroid Prime was made by American developers.

Though when people say "look at all the great japanese game we have," maybe they don't realize we only really get the top 5% of all the japanese titles. They only export the creme of the crop, the proven games they are fairly certain will sell in the states. There are vast acres and deep oceans of bizzare-ass shit that comes out in japan that will never see the light of day in the west and would never sell if it did. That's the kind of thing Kojima is talking about.

I think its a little strange that people so frequently make comparisons between western and Japanese games. They are pretty different cultures with pretty different values and thus the games produced are also fairly different. A comparison is also often made between the writing of western games and the writing in Japanese games and while Japanese games have a notoriety of bad dialogue it may have something to do with (and get this) its a translation. Translations don't always work well.

What needs to happen is for the more "out there" games to actually come to the west and then we will see their reception.

If I was Japaneese I'd hope an army of demon samurai will come and slay all those fucking manga creators (probably) responible for the insanity of the whole nation and bring back the awesome old culture.

Not all mangas are bad, but I do agree that people need to be hung for such things as yugioh bakugan or naruto.

I think kukul is right, but the japanese games industry should be ok, they do make two of the three current generation consoles

I remember reading about this - both he and Toshihiro Nagoshi were discussing their industries insularity. Of course, Nagoshi is guilty of this as well, as his games have several years of delay between Japanese and western release.

Well, there are some good and creative japanese games out like Persona and NoMoreHeroes, but those games bombed mostly. So, I think it's saying that creative things coming out of Japan are not reaching public mind, only stuff like Final Fantasy and Megaman seem to be the best-selling japanese titles.

And Street Fighter ...and Mario... and Zelda... and Metroid and and and.
