KOTOR for the first time

So, I got a copy of this a long, long time ago. It sat in my backlog for quite some time until I recently pulled it out to give it another try. I loved me some Neverwinter Nights, now it's time to play it again... IIINN SPAAACE!

And then I remembered why I deleted it shortly after installing it.

First level, right after second fight, the game would crash, black screen, hello desktop. Most bizarre thing. I patched to 1.03, still did it. Also, between initial version and patch, the SecuROM decided that my legitimate copy of the game was not legitimate and refused to let me play using the disk. No-CD executable got around this, but still the afore-mentioned crash bug persisted.

I was rewarded with my diligence (which was a lot of me saving/reloading the game until I pushed through the CTD bug) by being treated to a really great game. I haven't finished it just yet, but thus far
I'm at the part where you become a Jedi on Dantooine, shortly after getting the Ebon Hawk.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that this bug affected more than just me, and that may have had negative results overall. Did anyone else play and enjoy this title, or did they wipe it clean from the HD once it started fouling up, never to play it again?

Also, Canderous is a badass. I wonder if my pansy Light side character can ever crack through that gruff, semi-Dark exterior to make him a murderer in the name of good? Only time will tell.

I specced my character out horribly and happened upon Juhani by accident. She murdered my two companions while I ran away. I finally killed her...but then ended up next to a group of Mandalorians. They then killed me.[/spoier]

Never had any bug problems with Knights of the Old Republic. I played it on an Xbox once, my old computer twice, and my MBP twice. No bugs that I remember throughout any of those.

I played it on the Xbox and didn't have any bug problems. Though I heard that if you downloaded it, as opposed to playing from disc, that it suffered some issues.

Good to know the bugginess wasn't a factor for most normal people.

Dusty, I think I'm going to run into the horrible spec'ing/restart thing here soon. Good thing I know what I'm doing, should make a reroll go much smoother and quicker.

Susan, thanks for the heads up. I sometimes wish I had got a D2D or other download version; having to flip between disks for the install was something I had forgotten about. Less than fun.

I haven't been keeping up with the update KOTOR fan group, they where improving the graphics and adding stuff I need to look that up again...

Anyway ya fun game, I like it more than the sequel.

The game didn't really get going for me until Dantooine. The whole first planet felt like an extended tutorial. Other than that, great game!

If you want it just for convenience, keep an eye on those places for sales. I already had a copy, but I grabbed it on Steam just for the sake of not needing to install from disc or patch anything because it semi-regularly goes on sale for as low as $2.50. Probably does on D2D and other places, too. Great game, though. Probably still my favorite BioWare's ever made. Glad you were able to finally sort out the bugs and are enjoying it.

The only bug I've come across on KotOR is sometimes after combat my character will be rooted to the spot, he won't move and I have to switch to another party member and then back to him to be able to control him again.

I've experienced that a time or two. If I'm stubborn and hold a directional key, they'll eventually snap out of it.

It's been a while, but I think I had this problem as well. It didn't bother me that much, 'cos the game was pretty awesome anyway (fav RPG, actually).

I did enjoy the racing minigame... perhaps a bit too much, even though it brought me so much cash...

I have it for Xbox, so no problems with CD keys for me.

KotOR II was buggy as hell and wouldn't play on Xbox for some reason. Luckily I bought my friend's old copy recently and have been enjoying it on the PC with the restoration mod.
