KotOR - A bit old, but it won't hurt your eyes. It has some great characters (Jolee Bindo!), stellar voice acting and dialogs, decent gameplay, and the plot twist coming somewhere in 3/4 of the game is considered one of the best in history. The only thing I didn't like about it, is the fact, that non-Jedi team characters quickly become useless. Makes sense, since Jedi are so powerful, but on the other hand it's a pity, that you'll miss a lot of great dialogs with, say, HK-47, just because Bastila and Jolee are so much better gameplay-wise.
Pro tip: invest in force lighting no matter what side you play as. It's amazingly powerful after the first upgrade (not to mention the final one), and it's incredibly fun to use.
The Witcher - Some people complain about the main character, because he's quite an asshole. Some people complain, because the combat is a bit different than in other games (you have to time your clicks to proceed with the combo, and you have to switch between 3 battle stances depending on what kind of enemy you face), but I actually liked those. Geralt is spot on with himself from The Witcher novels, so I wouldn't want him any other way, and the combat feels refreshing after playing hundreds of games with 'click the enemy to death' combat.
Where The Witcher shines, is the good story with choices that really makes you feel that it's indeed YOU who shape it - you decided to burn the witch in the 1st act? Pity, she could've help you find the solution for one problem in 5th act. Now you have to find the alternative way. You decided to upset the girl, by NOT changing her boyfriend back from being a werewolf, because he actually likes it? Well, guess what, the werewolf himself will jump out to help you in a tight spot some time later. And that's only two of many situations like that.
Besides, The Witcher destroys the 'Light side/dark side' style of play. Whatever is the situation you'll encounter - it's never black or white. It's always grey. Order of the Flaming Rose? Fanatics and racists, but they actually make a good work at keeping the town peaceful if you're a good citizen, and they do have some good points in their doctrine. The Sco'iatel? Bunch of assholes and terrorists, but their cause to do so is justified - they fight back against the persecution. Helping any of those (or not helping anyone at all!) will always have some different pros and cons.

TL;DR: Both games are worth buying. I suggest checking out KotOR first, since it's a classic, but don't give up on The Witcher, it's worth playing as well.
Get KotOR and then don't level up your main character above level 2 (which the tutorial forces on you) until you become a Jedi about 1/4 of the way into the game. It's difficult at times (winning the arena requires some creative thinking when so drastically underlevelled), but it means that as soon as you gain your jedi class you can dump all that XP you saved into a useful class as opposed to your pointless starting class. Becoming a lvl 18 jedi by the end is great fun.
Yeah, I think what I'll probably do is get The Witcher today (as it's on special sale) and then get KotOR if it goes on proper sale at any stage, and if it doesn't, just get it at the end of the sales.Yossarian1507 said:

The combat system might not appeal to everyone, as everything is done by dice rolls, instead of your own skill, but I preferred it.
Okay, well the game itself is good. The story is thick and the characters are pretty real. I'll not get into the story but all you need to know is that you will want to progress to find out more. Each character you come across to include in your party has their own back story and some have their problems. As you play the game with them in your group you can find out about them and improve your relationship with them or destroy it, so if you can get into a game and be immersed then you'll really start to connect.No_Remainders said:
The fighting uses D&D system that allows you to plot out your attacks based on your skill level for different things. You can also pause the game (which the game will do on seeing a hostile target) to set out your next few attacks and powers.
The moral system is sith and jedi based, with obvious good and bad choices. However, you still need to make difficult decisions. They aren't all good or bad, they're what you want to do. Do you want to work for those credits bit by mediocre bit or do you want to scare the bloke into giving you what you want so that you can help the galaxy? Do you want to help out a bunch of little rascals because they did nothing wrong or do you want to kill them and cash in on their deaths so you can upgrade your armour? They aren't all money based but it's decisions like those.
Then you have the actual system of being good or bad. The Sith have some damn good powers for attacking and getting things out the way, but the Jedi have some awesome powers for keeping you alive. But, you use up your force more for using Sith powers if you're a Jedi and vice versa, so there's that decision to make and then factor in to your moral choices.
The only issue I had with the game was some of the battles. There isn't a right or wrong character build, but with customisation and difficult choices in abundance, there are difficult ones. I'm currently stuck at the ending with a pretty difficult battle to complete with no turning back. It's something that comes with all RPG games with customised classes.
But even if you don't like it, it's only £4.50 (consider that Pound sign a Euro sign, I don't have one on my keyboard) and it is well worth it. Also apologies if I've ruined any part of the game for you, I stayed away from the spectacular story so I didn't spoil it for you.
Also, I run Windows 7 and I can run it just fine. I think I might have had an issue at the start with it not running or some such thing but I'm not even sure it happened. It runs just fine all the time with me and I play loads of old games on Win7, there usually is a fix on the Steam forums anyway for old games being played on Win7. That's how I got Fallout 2 to work without having a rainbow colour palette.No_Remainders said:

Get KotOR. Seriously, at that kind of price point there's a fair chance it'll be the best purchase you ever make. Even now, eight years on, KotOR is still my second favourite game of all time - the first being Mass Effect 2. Though, if BioWare were to make a proper KotOR 3 with modern graphics, a Mass Effect-like dialogue system, and a slightly refined combat system, I suspect that game would reclaim KotOR's number one spot.

Because it has one of the most brilliant plot twists ever about 3/4 of the way into the game. Seriously, I had the twist spoiled for me a long time before I ever even got the game and the way the game handled it still made it AWESOME.

well if you have played dragon age or any similar games to it, the combat is very similar, where it is based off of stats and rolls, you do a more strategic kind of command rather than spaztic hack n slash. it has decent enough customization for weapons/clothes/shields/etc...No_Remainders said:
the characters are a huge favorite of mine (one of biowares traits obviously), once you talk to and really get to know the party, i think they are some of the most interesting characters ive ever had in a party before (a couple are kinda dull, but the majority of the party is awesome). The game itself is pretty straight forward, it really grasps the concepts of light and dark side pretty well, and you can choose which one you which to pursue, and it semi-shapes the story a bit, along with force power benefits depending on what you pick and choose.
overall i would say for someone who hasn't played it, its a pretty good rpg with enough openness that it doesn't feel too linear, but the story is pretty dang solid so side quests dont take over the majority of the game(there are a decent amount of sidequests though, and some fun racing mini games too!)
if you are into rpg's at all, i would recommend it (be warned though, the graphics aren't too amazing as its kinda old, and the combat is more tactical, not like oblivion or fallout.)
