I've been listening to some backward RPGcast (168), and there was mention of Kuja being a trap.

He is?

It seems that all of my friends (we're all Thais) knows that he's a guy from the first wink we got of him. He certainly wasn't too masculine, but he certainly doesn't appear girly to any of us.
A lot of other characters (especially in FF series) are also in this category. We can always tell if a character is male or female (except Final Fight's Poison).

Is this just an East-West thing? Can masculinity be so cultural-dependent to this point?

Gender is an INCREDIBLY cultural-dependant thing. After all, gender itself is defined by the culture that you're in at the time.

I thought Kuja's race was asexual.

It's mostly a culture thing, I think most people are just trying to make funny with androgyne jokes though.

I never thought he was a girl. I assumed he was a man from the first time I saw him, and I reckon I was 10 years old by then or something.

Whatever he is, I always found him a little disgusting. If you wall-run (er, float) as Kuja, you get a perfect shot of his under-thong armor thing. Ew.

I noticed he was male from when I first saw him in the game. I think it wasn't until later the camera panned down and revealed his shapely hips and thong as he sauntered away.

Now that "Queen" Brahne on the other hand....

It's a bit dubious. You can't say he's very masculine.

Doesn't stop him from being my favorite FF villain and Dissidia fighter.

he's a monkey, and as we all know, monkeys are like the opposite of elves (nobody finds them attractive)
It's a non-issue.

I figured it was blown out of proportion, but the theme is prominent enough that there must be something to it. The Magna Carta cover, on the other hand..that one, I could see.

The first time I saw that guy was a frontal pic though, so it was quite clear that he was a guy. I don't know why..there's just something about his face and hands that sort of gave it away for me.

I was just playing IX this weekend, and every time I see him, I just think "no way in hell that's a dude."

Kuja is male, and I don't remember thinking otherwise. Not like Flea in Chrono Trigger..

[sub]They are both hot, though..[/sub]

Not really Kuja, but it took me 3 months of noticing the Magna Carta case before I realized that the "group of anime women" on the cover was actually fronted by a male. I mean, it's pretty hard to tell.

So you can imagine my slight surprise when I actually played the game. I say slight because it IS Japan we're dealing with.
Actually, that's South Korea you're dealing with.

It could be that I'm desensitized or something, but I don't see what anyone means when they say they are androgynous...
