I'd say to get L.A. Noire, not because it's strictly better than Portal 2 (I enjoyed them both approximately equally), but because you get so much more content. When it's a choice between 2 great games, but one will last more than twice as long as the other, it's not a real choice at all.

Both games are awesome.

I would say Portal 2 is better crafted and has an great story, but it's definitely more play-based, obviously. It also won't last as long as L.A. Noire. L.A. Noire has its flaws, but is still an incredible gaming and storytelling experience, and it will last you longer than Portal 2 (I'm only about 2/3 through it).

If you need more time to gather the resources to buy the second game, start with L.A. Noire. If money's not a major issue then it comes down to whether you're more in the mood for a darkly comic puzzler or a Noir-Fiction open world type game.

Either way, Enjoy! They're great games, and I'd just get them both if you have the means.

~Cheers!

Portal 2 is excellent, but not worth $60. It's more like $30 of game.
Why'd you buy it for $60? I got it for $40 on the release day. If money is really an issue, OP, I recommend LA Noire for the sole reason that VALVe always does insane deals (TF2 for $2.50 on Halloween, for example).

I haven't played LA Noire and don't plan to, but does it really last 20 hours? That's how much time I've spent on Portal 2.

I recommend portal 2 if you enjoyed the first, but if you want more content go L.A. Noire.

Both are well worth getting.

Alright so I have just finished my years exams and have decided to purchase myself a game to reward myself.
Chances are I shall get both of these games at some point but I just wish to know what is considered better.
A bit about me: I have enjoyed the other games from rockstar a lot (especialy Red Dead Redemption) but I have also enjoyed Valve's Half Life series and Portal.
Which should I get?
Both games are more than worth the money. I will say that Portal 2 is not as long as LA Noire. But neither are games that I would ever fault someone for owning. Note that LA Noire is a VERY dark, graphic, gritty storyline, while Portal 2 is a much lighter, more humorous story.

Id go with Portal 2 personally i havent played L.A Noire but ive ventured through portal 2 and enjoyed it. if you haven't played portal, id recommend that first.. not sure if their still offering the bundle. But portal 2 is a great game and i hope everyone gets a chance to atleast sample its deep, indulgent work.

I didn't. I got it for $35 on release day. But not everyone has that option. Or caught the sales.

LA Noire's main story last around 20 hours, if you don't do any of the side quests at all. With sidequests I really don't know, maybe another 10 hours?

Id say LA...

If your purchasing today to reward yourself, should you reward yourself with more content?

I really do not get the point of buying Portal 2 right now knowing its less than 10 hours of content. 60$ is pretty high for 5-10 hours of content in my mind.
That's why I say go with Portal 2. They both have about the same amount of playtime and about the same degree of re-playability (not very much) but I would go with Portal 2 for one very big reason:
Portal 2 will be getting free dlc content for both single player & co-op.
LA Noir has additional content too but knowing R* it will probably be overpriced. The only reasonably priced dlc they ever made was the RDR Undead thing.

According to the Sunday paper, Best Buy has Portal 2 for 30 this week. Might save you a buck while you save up for LA.

It's hard to compare, really.

If you prefer puzzles, awesome humor, and a more gameplay-oriented game, then get Portal 2. You probably know about Portal's style of gameplay and humor. The sequel improves over those in almost every way. I say "almost" because the single player is far easier than the first one.

If you prefer a very story/character-heavy game, then get L.A. Noire. The detective work can get a bit tedious, though. Especially looking for damn clues - that's not being smart, it's just random searching.
Pretty much what this guy said. I mean, they are in completely separate genres. I've played through portal 2 about 4 times because I like it so much, and I NEVER usually replay games. This is the only game I have that has more than one, and heck, more than two playthroughs. It's definitely worth checking out if you like dark humor and interesting puzzle mechanics.

Portal 2. LA Noire is a great game, but it has its share of problems. It gets quite repetitive, the dialogue system could use some work, and there's a huge open world but there's very little to do in it. Portal 2 just has some aggravating load times and a slightly annoying second third of the game.

Portal 2 really isn't that short. It's still longer than most games - Singleplayer is something like 6-7 hours, co-op's another 4-5.

It depends. It really, really depends. Portal 2 is my Game of the Year for 2011 so far. I loved every minute of it. It was smart, funny, and all around an enjoyable experience. However, LA Noire has a lot more substance to it. Portal 2 was a blast, but it was simple. LA Noire is like a mixture between Red Dead Redemption, Phoenix Wright, and Indigo Prophecy and it's also nearly 20 hours long and that's if you don't screw around in the sandbox (Which you can. You can just drive around for hours... the map is massive). Portal 2 was also about 6 hours long with hardly any replay value and it was a lot more simple.

The thing is... I enjoyed Portal 2 more than I'm enjoying LA Noire, but I think LA Noire is all around a better game. If I were you, I'd just save up all my money for inFamous 2.
