Jack looked around.He could see a black piece on the other side of the board, but he couldn't make it out in the darkness.

He was on B1, and he tried to imagine what piece would be standing here in a real game of chess. "The knight!" Jack said. So he could only move in a L shape. He thought about what to do next.
Then he moved forward three and one right, so he was standing on C3.

Sorry i took a while to post, i was away for the weekend, back now though. You did say there was only one black piece right? or is there a full chessboard on the black side?
