Lag in Left 4 Dead

I bought Left 4 Dead for the PC today, since I unfortunately don't have Xbox Live. However, I keep experiencing so much lag I can't play past the first mission (in fact I can barely get through the opening cutscene). Any tips on reducing lag, or how to limit the effects?

This is probably best off in the steam forums.

But from my own experience the latest patch for L4D has caused me nothing but graphical lag and other problems.

Before that it worked beautifully.

I've had to turn down some effects to get back decent performance and now I'm relying on the next patch to fix things.

Lag?, on single player or every time you play it online?

If it is happening during muli than your connection might be bad, if it is on single than I think there may be a problem with the disk. But I am no expert in the matter.

Both times, actually, single and multi. I'll try and tone down the effects, see if that helps. If not I'll have to wait for a patch.

Might be a graphic card/driver issue. I had similar problems when I first installed the game and later after a patch. The first time I needed to update to the latest driver for my graphics card and the last time I needed to roll back to an earlier one to fix the problem.

The last update seems to have fucked things up righteously. Starting a campaign dropped me into a versus game more than 15times in a row (That's when I stopped counting) and it never found me a game with better then 2bars connection, or a campaign game for that matter...

Wait for the next update, if anyone else has been experiencing this I expect it to follow quite quickly.

Oh good, so it wasn't just me and my friends playing Dead Air in Versus.

wow, it seems like i'm the only person that hasn't been screwed by the latest update...

The update screwed me too; I can't play online anymore, since I'm running an unofficial Cider port, and it's incredibly hard to upgrade software that explodes if the environment isn't just right.

Nah, I haven't had any problems either.

Do you know if it's internet lag or fps lag? I don't know much about fixing internet, but I know of a few tricks to help with fps lag.
