So those intrepid Russian scientists have finally reached Lake Vostok that lies buried about 3.5 kilometres beneath the Antarctic. I really just wanted to share this with y'all as I find stuff like this incredibly exciting (I'm a science geek without any real knowledge of science), but for discussion value:

What do YOU think lies underneath the ice? Using your imagination (<-- bolded for emphasis) earns you a(n) Amazing Cookie [+1 Internet].

I'm thinking alien spaceships, a dinosaur, or a microbe that will turn us all into the zombies. Boring I know. What's your fanciful (or not) suggestion?

EDIT: Aw crap, I accidentally posted this in the wrong forum. Mod help please?

you seen alien vs predator? i vote for that
Nuh uh uh, I dont want a subpar crossover film that spawned what is quite possibly my most hated movie of all time (AvP2)

I vote for something like The Thing, original or remake.

The ruins of a city built by The Elder Things and giant, albino penguins. And possibly also a Shoggoth.

A(n) Awesome Cookie [+1 Internet]! Congratulations!

Nothing. Well, water, but other than that nothing. Maybe a killer virus of some kind, in which case I'm glad I live on a hill away from the city...

And the rest of his band. :)

I'd also vote for human kindness.

Oooo have they finally done it then? That's interesting.

One of the main objectives of the mission was to test if it was possible to drill through that amount of ice and not contaminate the lake below with anything from the surface IRC.

The point of this was to get info to help design a probe that would fly to Europa and then land and drill through the ice, there's a theory that the Europa actually has liquid water oceans under the ice and that there may be hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor powered by the flexing of the rock in the core caused by Jupiter's gravity. Some of the oldies known forms of life are very simple extremophile bacteria that live in places on our own planet just like that so it's possibly the best place in our solar system other than the earth to look for life.

Just imagine how exciting it will be if we find it there.

I just want to say, your suggestion is both terrifying and awesome. Mostly terrifying.

This all sounds cool I guess when you think about how deep it is, but Im failing to see how this is um... well, I'll just flat out say interesting. Like, is there something REALLY special about htis place other than its depth and size?

anyway, my guess is some kinda ancient bacteria that will kill us all. Sure, not exactly the most imaginative answer, but the most likely aside from nothing.

Probably that paper boy who kept demanding I tip him. I told him he didn't deserve it, but he kept pushing, and I told him one more time I was going to bury him as deep as I could. I thought no one would hit that lake, so I dunno, could be in trouble.....

.....I mean, uh Jimmy Hoffa? What paper boy? You can't prove anything!

Oh is this a new game?!?

No? Oh, then what is it doing in Gaming Discussion?

Anyway, I'm sure they'll find some pretty cool bacteria down there... that's about it. We'll see.
