Which do you prefer? I personally like LAN parties better because I find I can communicate with the guys I'm playing with more easily in person than I can with a microphone or by typing while playing a game. I also like the parties I've been to where we took breaks to get pizzas, party subs etc and ate and talked games, movies etc. together. I used to go to LAN parties in Oklahoma when I lived there. It was fun, kind of like being in a club or something. I wish I could find a place or two like that in Las Vegas where I live now.

LAN parties: not only are you guaranteed not to encounter any small childs, there's usually food, and there is a much higher score to subject-of-physical-harm-from-the-other-team ratio.

Which is always fun.

I like LAn as well.. It's kind of sad to get drunk while gaming alone.

What about having a LAN party while playing online? That is where Halo 3 truly shines and you can have 8 people or so, abusing the annoying little kid instead of just yourself.

LAN parties win.
One thing is the 100mBit connection, but a major part is the idea that you can sometimes see the reactions of people around the room.

I was once in a 2 minute eratic firefight in CS, and right as I nail the guy (was a very, very equal fight, I didn't own him at all) I see some random guy I don't know jump up from his char a few rows ahead of me and I'm just like: "Ok, I'll just sit here and act normal, 'cus he looks BIG!" :p

I prefer LAN because of the general atmosphere. There's something just so fun about getting a bunch of friends together to whoop eachothers backsides at whichever game is up at the time. And if someone's doing something naughty, you can back hand them across the face. A wonderful bonus.

LAN parties. They're great, especially the social ones. As mentioned previously, it's great to be able to backhand someone who's giving you shit--but also, they often come with barbecues attached.

While LAN parties are more fun and more social in the gamign aspct, nowdays Online is the dominant part.
With faster and faster connections to the INternet, LAN parties have lost their meaning.
Why would I want to carry my extremely heavy PC-case to a LAN-party when I in reality have access to everything from my comfortable comptuer desk at home?

Yes, LAN is inherently superior. It has free munchies and actual people. However it's a lot harder to pull off.

If you do though, it can be awesome. It's a shame microsoft is killing it with the compulsory Xbox-live-for-any-multiplay-at-all shit.

LAN online. Having your clan round in the same room getting drunk and playing hours of games as a proper team. Ahhh the cries and shouts of joy, the ease of communication, the team spirit and shared moments of glory and blood rage. Good time's

LAN-parties, because it's tough to get drunk with your buddies on the internet.
