My school's computer club (of which I am the president) is having an overnight lock in/ lan party at the school in January. I'm pretty excited, as I've never been part of a LAN party before. We'll probably play alot of Counter Strike Source and Unreal Tournament 2004, seeing as they are cheap and easy to get set up in.

Anybody have any cool Lan party experiences to share? Or any tips on anything like what types of food items should be availabe? And, of course ideas for fun games would be welcome :]

I've had many amazing LAN Party stories, but really only stopped by to comment on how seriously awesome it is that you're the president of your schools computer club, and that you can set up an overnight lan party.

Kudos, my friend.

I've had 360 LANs with Halo 3 and Gears 2, but as me an one other friend are the only oness with gaming rigs, I have been unable to get a computer LAN going here. One of the big things is to have more than one type of game. You don't want only realistic shooters or scifi shooter, bring C&C or Starcraft for variety, even if you don't use it, it's still there incase and doesn't take up much space.

It's a LAN party, do it properly. Doom Deathmatch. It's the reason why we even have LAN parties in the first place. Or Operation Flashpoint and have everybody agree to race tractors instead of fighting.

Thanks. I'm hoping it all goes good and well, and that no one does anything crazy/ dangerous/ illegal (besides a good ol' fileshare, of course) or the school principal will make an example out of me.

Execution style.

If you've all got good computers, get a copy of Supreme Commander (And the Forged Alliance expansion) and try that - if you get an RTS urge.

It's amazing fun.

Also, Team Fortress 2 is hilarious in LANs

LAN Doom Co-op with seven other people. I think we killed ourselves more than we did monsters.

Just pray that the people who come are comfortable around eachother, since it just isn't a LAN party if there isn't massive amounts of Charles Barkley-style smack talk being shouted across the room. There are are few places that are more unpleasant in their awkwardness than a LAN party.

My high school used to have LAN parties all the time, mostly for Unreal Tournament or Halo CE. We had it set up so you could log into any PC on the network and just go.

The best part is when we'd have classroom VS classroom battles. Those were always the best. My favorite memory of that was one that someone hosted that was basically "My class red, everyone else blue" and we ended up destroying everyone over and over again in CTF.

When I got my friends into UT2004, that's when things got really serious. I wish I could go back to that...

Playing half-life 2 campaign in garrysmod at a LAN, where you cannot do the puzzles the way you are supposed to, but have to construct various contraptions to do it.

Me and a friend ended up making a complicated pully system to lift the can into the bin on the oh so famous "pick up that can" part of half-life 2, we also constructed chair-lifts to get us through elevated windows at box stacking parts, we constructed our own boats for the airboat missions and hilariously failed at attempting to outrun the chopper bombs.

It's great fun, if you have a bit of imagination and a buddy, I would reccomend it a lot.

Yeah, I'm hoping to mix it up a bit, but the people going are quite... picky. They might want something a tad more recent than Starcraft, yet their rigs are still pretty mediocre, so I'm not sure.

Maybe C&C 3?

Me and My Clan mates do this on ArmA 2, when we are bored after a huge battle.

funniest thing to do on a game ever.

Try Warcraft 3.. The modded maps (custom maps) for that game are huge and diverse, while keeping the integrity of the game intact.
Really, just realistic shooters?
Ehh.. The LAN parties i go to have Rainbow six Vegas 2, COD4, Warhammer 40K:Dark Crusade, Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, battlefield 2 and command and conquer 3.
They are normally heaps of fun.

omg this is your FIRST lan!? (*squeals with excitement*)
Lans are the BEST! You get to scream at the douche of the team irl instead of fuming at your screen!
best advice? Make sure nobody has a virus, and if you suspect massive lag, you might have some idiot downloading EVERYONE's shared folders onto their own computer.
Yea, really happened to a party once, the guy had a spare terabyte and decided to lag everyone else
And don't put anything in your shared folder that you don't want other ppl to have, like pics of your girlfriend (oh who am i kidding)
oh also pick good games everyone else has. CSS and unreal is cool cos everyone has it, same with FPS's (tho i guess not everyone likes those)
There's a lot more co-op games that require teamwork, try getting everyone to play TF2, it's so much more fun with friends

My only LAN Experience, was after an All night tourney for CoD 4 (We actually went to a tournament place and booked the place for 12 hours) we finished the tourney in about 9 hours. So what did we do for the rest of the time you ask?

A KNIFE only tourney. No nades, no smokes, no flashes, no air strikes, no helicopter, no UAV just KNIFE! Next to 0 ping.

I of course had an unfair advantage, because I never told anyone my clan has a Knife Only server for CoD 4.

Funny part was that you could see some of the reactions on the faces when I killed some one, the look on their faces CLEARLY seeing that they wanted to yell "OMG WTF HACKS".

(Funny Example, on Crossfire, the sniper room at the top of the street over looking down of street, on the right side while facing it is a ladder leading up to it in a alley. That window is usually camped for easy kills, I go up, see a guy he backs up for safety I jump back then exploit the lunge physics leap through the window then forward 2 metres and stick the guy in the eye with my knife. Good times Good times :3 )

1. download some maps for CSS like Deathrun or Surf.
2. drink some alcohol.
3. hilarity ensues.

CoD4 is great for LAN, even if you hate it online (like I do).
Company of Heroes is a win for RTS games. WW2 usually interests everyone, and the basebuilding is really simple in it.
CoD5 and Nazi Zombies is fun in the smaller hours.
UT3 and UT2K4 have been pretty popular within my LAN buddies. Not a great fan myself though.
AvP2 used to be creamworthy. Sadly enough the game is a bit outdated nowadays to actually get a real scare out of. Back in the days, every marine player in the room would burst to tears of fear, atleast once.

Make sure everyone's comfortable with piracy. There's no way in hell a room full of people are going to have all the different games bought, just out of coincidence.

Make sure to play the RTS games, and games you need to be focused in, early on. After 6am, everyone's going to be so damn tired, they won't have the energy to play starcraft, but suddenly Call of Juarez II seems like the greatest thing on earth. So bad it's good.

Beer/pot makes everything better, except intercourse, but since it's a school, I don't think you can have any of the former, and since it's a LAN party, I'm guessing you won't have any of the latter either. :)

All my LAN memories are pretty much inside jokes, you wouldn't get them, so I won't share them.

Hope you have a good time.

C&C is fun, but I'm not sure if you should do RA3 or Tiberium. Someone else said Warcraft3, which I remember being fun. I heard Dawn of War is pretty good, but make sure it's a game everyone or at least almost everyone is willing to play.
