LAN Party

Hey Escapists. I am having a small LAN party with some close friends this weekend and I am looking for some games that would be good for it. Free games are preferred since I dont have to convince people to buy them. I would still like ones that are paid too if that is all you know of though.

I am especially looking for RTS games.

Brood war? It's not free, but it is pretty damn cheap, and great for LAN parties.

TF2, Sid Meier's Alpha Centuri is about $10 and is old enough not have an activation key.

Best game for LAN parties to come out in recent memory is Artemis. Its a starship bridge simulator game. Kind of like a multiplayer Star trek bridge commander. I have a group of friends that gathers one a month and we turn it into a drinking party. The house rule is the captain has to fetch the beer

Warhammer 40k Dawn of War is really awesome to play with some friends, the first DoW not the sequel that is, you can get it very cheap too. Other great games for LAN are anything from the Halo series, anything from the CoD series. I don't play many RTS games so I can't be of too much help.

Most of the games we play at our LAN parties aren't free, Half-life 2 Deathmatch, Minecraft, COD4:MW, Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe (this one is free), WoW, Civilization 5 (or the older ones before), Left4Dead.

We usually also check wether or not Steam is having a free weekend of something to give that a try.

Warcraft 3 has an absolute crap ton of custom maps that you should be able to find something fun there to play LAN.

Mobas, dungeon crawls, RPGs, Hero Line battles, normal RTS, party games and a whole lot more.

Otherwise there's Sins of a Solar Empire, if you're looking to spend a good hour or more per game anyway. Those games can last a Looong time.

Armagetron Advanced is free and kinda cool. It's the light cycles from Tron, but a game. So, yes, it's multiplayer Snake, except you don't eat things and your trail is permanent until you're killed. I get tired of it pretty quickly, but the LANs I go to love it. Luckily we play it in short spurts, but often (too often for me [/hardlife]).

Blur is awesome in LAN. Mario Kart on PC with real cars!

FlatOut 2 or FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage are great for LANs, fun mini games and fun racing. 2 is older for old PCs and UC is the same game with better graphics, and uses Games for Windows Live... and may not actually have LAN either... Uh, use 2.

MOBA games are fun and free at a LAN party if the host has good internet and can somehow wire everyone in.
