I am going to get a laptop for uni this year but if I am honest I am not really that clued up on them. I know about desktops and with one I just built not long ago I am not looking for a high performance one.

It would be for writing my disertation on so I was thinking about getting one with a bigger screen instead of a netbook beacuse when I used netbooks not only did they take ages to boot up it was also difficult to see much on them.

I was having a look at this one but I am still undecided.

I'd get a Lenovo Thinkpad if I were you. They're expensive, but they're tougher as nails and have some great tech inside of em.

I will have a look at them thanks. It might be worth getting a more sturdy one after all 10,000 words in then to drop it is not something I want to go through. Although I would hope that I would be backing up my work on a server or something along those lines. On that issue any recomendations how to do that other than just uploading it to hotmail every so often.

Google Docs is great for that; you get an insane amount of storage, and it saves itself every few seconds. I use it for everything.
Oh yeah, and it's totally free.

I never actualy tried google documents. I will have a use of that thanks. Is it pretty quick to update? I can't remember I think it was msn documents which had an update button which updated the draft storing the previous one somehow as well. That was pretty good.

The one you got there is actually pretty decent.
I used to work on a R50 and unless their build quality has taken an enourmous dive, this one should serve you quite well.
Just be aware that you will be carrying a MASSIVE brick around with you (I personally view 17' laptops more as desktop replacement, but if you don´t mind the weight I guess the screen is pretty nice).

If you want something more lightweight, I can really recommend the Thinkpad X220 (X220i if you do not need a lot of power). Probably the best consumer laptop they´ve ever done, in that it is affordable while getting a lot of the perks of their higher-end models. With education discount, I think you can get it for around 700 bucks, which is just insane value for money.

depends, are you planning to use it for gaming, or just a regular laptop?

i personally have a dell xps L501X, and its awesome. got a good graphics card, decent hard drive, 4gb ram (although i'm upgrading mine to the 8gb max), and a fairly decent processor.

it can run most new games at least on a mid setting, and i haven't had any issues with it myself.

It would really be for uni stuff. I have a desktop for games. So taking it into uni and doing research on it sometimes.

A netbook would be ok but the problem is the screen is very small and for doing research you really need to be able to split the screen and type at the same time as reading.

I don't really want to spend more than 400 pounds on it which I know seems pretty low but it's a conveniance thing rather than using uni pcs which are in the one spot always buisy when you need them.
