I have 2 laptop hard drives, both are seagate one is a 250 gb momentus 5400.4 the other is a 120 gb 5400.3. The 250 one was in a friends laptop and she was having troubles with it so I took a look at it. After looking up error codes and such I found out that the laptop had over heated and possibly ruined the HD but I was able to hook up the HD to my desktop for a few sec so I know its at least semi ok. Anyways because the two HD's are similar I'm wondering as an absolutely last resort if i could swap the 250 gb platter into the 120 gb?

platter?

Since they're both 2.5" HDD's It'll work with any replacement drive you decided to use (Provided its SATA with SATA port, IDE with IDE)

If you can, if you have a PC with SATA connectivity, try connecting your friend's HDD up, copy the data off and do a full Check Disk "CHKDSK" on it, including attempt to fix bad sectors. If your lucky you might prolong its death, if not, you can at least plop a new one in and re-install from scratch then load her data on.

Bad alternative, get a new HDD and lose the data. (Either way, DO NOT FORGET TO DOWNLOAD THE DRIVERS AS WELL. AND ALWAYS INSTALL THE MOTHERBOARD DRIVER FIRST)

EDIT: And welcome to the Escapist.

Thanks just wanted to make sure because I've never needed to try something that drastic before. And yes have hooked it up via a Blacx docking station and via SATA and my comp kinda recognizes it but I'm pretty sure something else is wrong. I'll try all aforementioned instructions but not really holding my breath.
