The dell XPS M1530 looks like a decent gaming machine. 4 Gigs of Ram (lolvista) NVidia 8600gt Video Card. Hueg hard drive, and pretty light weight.
This looks good, 4 gigs of ram is great, the graphics card is pretty damn good for laptops, and it also has 500 gigs of harddrive standard which is great for a laptop. However, the processor is not the best ever; it's very close to the same processor I have in my laptop, and the laptop I bought only costs $600. I was then going to suggest to upgrade to it's best processor through the "customize" option, and for $400 extra you can get a decently better processor, but I don't think it's worth that much money and don't know if your parents would blow $2k on a laptop.

All in all it's still a great laptop for a good deal, but there is a slim chance you might be able to find something better for a cheaper price.

A great place to check for good deals for laptop is newegg.com

I am not up to standard on my computer hardware but I would have say ruling out the Dell Studio laptops because it seems every time I unplug the bastard it seems to be almost dead. The most I get out of it is 2 hours at best, the graphics and any other thing you may desire are fine but the battery aggravates you so much after a short time.
