Laptop Recommendations

OK, so I'm going off to college in a few months and I need a laptop. It doesn't have to be anything too fancy, just capable of handling schoolwork and internet surfing mainly. It also has to be under $1000. So my fellow Escapist, any recommendations?

You could get a netbook of some sort, those are small, portable, and fairly cheap.
If all you want is schoolwork (Powerpoints and essays, I'm going to assume), and internet, you can get a super cheap one, for, at the most, under $500.

Don't buy from a big box store.
And get an Asus. Excellent machines.

I have an Asus N10J netbook, and it's very sweet (albeit small since it is a netbook).

Well by your specifications i can't recommend you a Mac (unless you want one that doesn't play DVD's). However i can recommend a Toshiba Satellite.
