Man I love the Tomb Raider reboots! I mean, I loved the first two games. But The Shadow of the Tomb Raider is like....bogus man. The story revolves around Lara and her pal Jonah (who I'm pretty sure fucking died in Rise) for to find more magical bullshit to save the world from Trinity. On paper that's fine, I expected that because of what happened in Rise. But Shadow somehow manages to make this escalation of the conflict of Trinity boring and anti-climatic as fuck. Lara herself shows no real growth, outside of being a better murder machine, she remains a selfish ***** in a lot of ways.

I was really hoping for more, I wanted to see Lara be more mature about her exploration of tombs, about how she handles combat, about everything really. And she just doesn't. This was supposed to be the game where Lara becomes the confident, calm, cool and collected badass she is in the original games. Instead she is basically the same, though I swear her voice actress has lost her accent most of the time.

Perhaps Shadow was a rush job of a game. Rather than develop Lara and her story, they created all these bogus and bullshit reasons for her to do shit, without really providing a satisfying resolution.

On the bright side Shadow does do some things well. The puzzle tombs are much better than any previous game, which I would assume. The combat is a lot cooler, especially in regards to stealth capabilities and you really can play "Lara Croft: Predator" in this game which is awesome.

I mean I guess I'm just sad that the story failed me. Gameplay, combat, graphics, everything else is fine. Just the story is soooooo fucking....meh.

Shadow was supposed to be in my top games of the year list. Instead it's gonna end up on the Disappointment list and that just sucks.

When that didn't happen in Rise I started to suspect that people who write the stories for these games are at best incompetent. Rise had an awful fuckin' story and literally NO character development.

That's sorta the baseline for this trilogy though. The best I can say about the 1st 2 games was that they are fun romps, though I thought the writing was noticeably worse in Rise. I did have higher hopes for Shadow because I think I read they got new writers, but even then we are still taking video games here where good writing is basically an endangered species. I wish the series would've just been Tomb Raider instead of being Uncharted.

I mean the writing was never fantastic, but it was good enough to have a fun adventure through the rest of the game. B-grade action movie stuff you know?

I dunno if they got a new writer, but if they did then it was definitely a downgrade because the story here is dogshit. I've seen porn with better stories.

If my memory serves me right, he didn't die. He did get wounded but the immortal bloke managed to save him. Its been a while, so I could be wrong.

Rise is just a really boring game.

I've tried to get through it on 3 separate occasions and I get bored after a few hours every time. I think the biggest problem with the game is the upgrades and new weapons that you get. They take the piss easy combat and make it even easier. Combine that with mediocre writing and a lack of character development and I just can't bring myself to keep playing.

You get all of these skills, weapons, weapon upgrades, and pretty much every single thing that you get makes the game worse and worse because it completely trivializes the completely non-threatening enemies.

Rise is a game where you basically play Jason Voorhees, an unstoppable juggernaut of death and destruction, but the game keeps pretending that you're the one in constant peril. It's maddening.

So would you say this is a prime example of ludonarrative dissonance?

Yeah, I'm of the same mind. I quite enjoyed the Tomb Raider reboot but Rise just is... dull and I can't bring myself to care to play more of it. She kinda loses that 'sympathetic character who is over her head but doing her best' thing once she has managed to kill more people then a decent sized natural disaster.

Classic wasn't good
Gameplay wise or mean Lara herself in terms of character?
What I remember from gameplay was doing somersaults shooting. And was it number two where you were chasing a villian and four or five times you had a shoot out. Once shot enough, he'd run away. He was so much of a bullet sponge, he should have been in Borderlands.

The story to me is about as memorable as Rise of the Tomb Raider. Ie. It wasn't

The point it loses me is when she gets to the village and single-handedly saves everyone, and all the villagers tell her how she's the best and they can't do it without her. You can't have someone both be in over their head and also be the amazing super badass who saves the day without breaking a sweat. You're literally running up on squads of train soldiers and cutting them down with a single shotgun blast each like they don't even exist.

Why are you even commenting when you haven't even played these games? You even said it multiple times. And everybody knows that you don't play games with female protagonists.

I played TR 2013 and rise of both. and both were terrible. heavily scripted, bad combat, easy one button platforming.

on other hand portal was excellent. and you play as female in portal.

But I am not asking for the exact gameplay of the PS1 days returning where everything is a block shape.

I just want Lara's classic look back:

But she NEEDS to do this! She has to do it for her dead father!

Yeah. I'm getting kind of tired of them not only dawdling around with Lara's character development, or lack thereof. Not only the "Innocent college kid" who keeps getting dragged into these situations, except that she doesn't at this point....and the almost inevitable return to Lara's Daddy issues, which I keep hoping she'll finally get over in this incarnation.
