The last typewriter was produced today in Mumbai, India. I thought it was a neat little fact I wanted to share. How many people have actually used a typewriter here? I think there is one in my house and I used it to write a few papers when I was a little kid for school.

I used to have one, used it some times when I was young. Not sure exactly where it is now though. Interesting fact though.

I don't think I've ever used a typewriter in my life. Kind of makes you wonder though, if computers are the things that kill off the typewriter, what's going to kill off the computer?

Well, smartphones and tablets are essentially computers already, just in a more portable form. I think it'll be a good while yet before the keyboard and mouse as an interface go away entirely, so I think the desktop will be around for a while yet.

There was an interview on CBC Radio about Typewriter Enthusiasts last week. It was a neat story of a High School Kid who types everything he hands in and even brought his typewriter to class to take notes <3.

I've used one, back in the 90's. Haven't since though.

Fwooaar! Talk about finger-strength! Typewriters add an interesting dimension to thinking about early/mid-century poetry when you consider there was very much a manual 'procedure' to writing drafts out - words carried weight.

Lovely sound, as well. Never used one myself but watched my mother use one, that and a sewing machine - fascinating when you're a toddler.

I'd imagine what replaces the PC is going to be a home server that you can plug in your wireless devices, your cars computer, and does things like controls the TV, doors, house hold appliances, etc. . Basically something in your house that integrates your entire life, maybe even someday you will be plugged into the system.

I own three typewriters - two Remingtons from the 1950s, and one clunky, black Underwood that's nearly a century old. Still use them sometimes, too.

Wow, that's actually really interesting. It also made me realise that I've never used one... I want one now

Funny question, but how do they sound? It's hard to beat, isn't it.
How do you keep them in good condition?

By that arguement you could say that computers are essentially advanced typewriters!

But yeah, I agree with you. As long as desktops are more powerful than tablets etc. there will always be a place for them.

It's a unique sound, all right. Every time I hit a key, it produces a sort of metallic chopping sound. ("Chuk", I think it could be spelled.) And then, of course, there's the "Ding" of the little bell that goes off every time you're getting close to the edge of the paper. Followed by the "Trrrrrrrrrrrrrrc-CHUNK" when you push the carriage assembly back to its starting position.

As for maintenance, I don't really know. I've never had trouble with any of my typewriters. The most complicated thing I've had to do so far, is changing the ribbon. Typewriter ribbons are still available at most bookshops. They only come with plastic spools these days, though, so when the Underwood needed a new ribbon, I had to remove the used ribbon from the old metal spools and "rewind" the replacement ribbon onto them instead!

I have never used a typewriter. I have only been in the same room as a typewriter maybe 20 times. I shed a tear for a fallen technology that did so much for us through the years.

I used one quite a bit when I was a little kid, mostly dicking around and learning how to spell, but event then they were going out.

I used to use my mother's electric typewriter for papers back in the day. I did not get on the computer (at home) until about grade 5/6. I do not know how I lived.
