Excellent video, it makes you think that there must have been some models tailored towards writing music. I'm glad your own is in such good condition.

Yes, the feel and the sound are almost 'earthy' when compared to the unnatural hum of the computer. There's something very satisfying about moving parts and the 'feel' of such an instrument; old cameras are the same, all whir and click and life.

There's one not fifteen feet away from me hiding in the closet right now, and the only reason that it's not on my desk is because it's one of those new(er) fangled Electronic typewriters. Also because it has a built in dictionary (French Only) and a friggin' annoying 'Boop!' sound when it sees a mispelled word. Typing in ze English gets very bothersome very quickly.

I am on the look out for an older, completely mechanical one though. Somehow I'm more motivated in my writing when I'm creating an actual, physical copy as the process rather than just turning the pixels from white to black on screen.

Keyboarding (learning to type) in my junior high was taught on a typewriter. We even had the pieces of paper over it so we couldn't watch out hands while we typed.

OLD School.

Funny thing is, I didn't get good at typing until I started programming.

Kinda sad. I remember using a typewriter as a child. Our increasing dependance on "non physical" technology like computers, tablets and iphones has me a little concerned as to what we would do if ever these things started crashing wholesale. How many people can even write legibly by hand these days? I know I have trouble after twenty plus years using a keyboard.

I learnt to type on a manual typewriter at a very young age and I even owned my own at one point. I got rid of it though because it was actually pretty fucking useless once I had a computer and word processor. Sure, they look cool but they're heavy, a pain to use, and deleting mistakes was a real pest.

We used to have a succession of ancient Remingtons transiting through our house when I was growing up, my father used to recondition them as a hobby/side job. They were all circa 1950 or so, he really liked those models. I learnt to peck away at those things at the same time I learned to read and write. My mother had an IBM Selectric that I was forbidden to touch, it was a classy looking thing. As well as those ancient beasts I had a daisy wheel electric for a long time, until I got the Commodore 64 and a dot-matrix printer. Never looked back except with a sense of nostalgia.

There was a typewriter at the business my mother worked at when I was very little and my first dentist used a really old typewriter (I'm talkin' pre-electric typewriter) Other than that I didn't see very many of them, nor did I ever have to use one in any actual capacity.

I actually find it hard to believe there's nobody making typewriters anymore as despite it's obsolescence I know some people who enjoy writing on a typewriter simply because it's a more tangible way of typing than a PC and keyboard. I'm sure somewhere there's somebody creating typewriters for that niche group of people who want to use them. Same as the very few companies that still produce vinyl records. (and put modern music on them to boot)

Now something that's really damned hard to get one's hands on is a 35mm film projector. I've always wanted one of those with a movie or two to watch on it. Hmm, I wonder if there's a company that would take DVD films and transfer them to 35mm for viewing purposes....quickly Robin, to Google!

I'm pretty damn sure that they're going to continue making electric typewriters.

The only experience I've had with a typewriter was messing with one when I was a kid at my mom's office, typing dirty words and such.
