As a law enforcement officer (and at one time Jailer) I've had a few lawsuits thrown my way. It's something they don't go over much on TV but it's just a fact of the job. Especially when you're in corrections. You're probably going to be personally sued. This is why most police/corrections officers NEED unions.
I've been sued twice when working a jail.
1st) because a guy tried to hang himself and as i was saving his life he began fighting me and placed his gross yellowy toenail in my face (cut my cheek) I then pulled back a bit so he couldn't kick me again my reach is pretty long and i'm pretty strong so i held him at an awkward angle. As i waited for the sarge to come into the cell with the 'suicide knife' (a massive hooked blade made for cutting towels/ropes ect) to cut him down. Somewhere in the struggle i dislocated/sprained the man's ankle.
So he sued me and the other officer on scene (who wasn't in the cell she was in the doorway telling all the other inmates to go to their cell and close the door)
It was of course thrown out before it made it to a grand jury.
Cut to about three months ago, a whole 5 years after his Xmas eve suicide attempt. I see that SAME guy on the street, he has seen a robbery. About 1/2 way into our conversation when it clicks with him that i'm the same guy. First he starts to run (he was a witness to a crime) then i grabbed his arm and said "I ain't gonna hurt ya, past is past." He then thanked me for saving his life and became an integral past of putting a convinced store robber behind bars for a while.
The suspect in the robbery case TRIED TO SUE me as well when we were interviewing him he took a swing at my partner and i throw him on the table to cuff him it broke his nose and chipped a tooth.
I want to add that his teeth looked like a cemetery before hand.
Since this was all on video it was thrown out.
I guess the conversation value here is twofold:
Have you or anyone you've known ever been sued?
