They might actually be good?

Honestly, I think Greg Tito here is a little nice when he calls civ 5 a successful project. That game has gotten more hate than any Sid Meier's Civilization game ever.
Where? Aside from hardcore Civ-fans who are so set in their ways they'll never accept anything new, I have heard nothing but good things.

Well, who likes it, other than easily impressed neophytes?

See how your logic looks when someone uses it against you?

Fact is, the number of people participating in its community, right now, is about the same size as the number of people in the Civ 4 community. Considering the latter is a much older game, it's hard to say that 5 is as widely successful.

What I meant was that their will simply always be the hardcore fans who will never accept anything new in the series. This goes for pretty much every sequel ever of any successful game, it's impossible to please everyone.

I do not frequent Civ-sites, so the community I'm aware of is pretty much the "general" gaming community, like this forum for example, and a few others like this one, and the whole point of the second part of what I wrote, is that I have honestly read nothing bad about Civ V until I read this thread.

The thing is, that it isn't a terrible game. But imagine each year at christmas, your parents gave you 100 dollars. Then one year, your parents have a second child, and from that year on, they only give you 50 dollars. The second child has no idea that this isn't just awesome free money, but you can't help but feel like you are missing out.

And of course, in the real world, it isn't a gift, but something you payed for. I put 50 hours into civ 5. Seems good right? I've stopped playing and don't intend to go back. I've put in, quite literally, 500 hours into civ 4, and still play it.
