Most of Shen's skills revolve around high survivability.
-His passive, Ki Strike, scales with your *BONUS* HP (HP granted by items).
-Taunt draws aggro to you, and in a team fight, that means a ton of auto-attack damage headed your way. Items like Mercury's Treads, Warmog's, Frozen Mallet, Thornmail, etc are all incredibly good on Shen. I cannot understate the usefulness of Taunts, as they effectively work like snares and silences all in one go.
-Feint is a very strong dedicated shield effect.
-Stand United is designed to let you save teammates from anywhere, and close ganks.
Teleporting in and Taunting enemies to you works best if you're a tank. This also lets you join teamfights from anywhere on the map.

Ok, let's break it down.

1. Play the tutorial. Then play Coop games against Easy AI. Then play Coop games against Intermediate AI. This should adequately teach you the basics of the game and how it proceeds. Intermediate bots are more cmpetent than quite a few human players I've seen, so there's that.

2. DO NOT DIE! This is your first priority. This is the basic lesson you should learn. Focus on it. Focus on not getting killed. Everything comes from that.

3. Not losing is more important than winning. Or in other words - avoid risks if you want to win. I can't stress this enough. Play safe, play carefully, avoid suicide runs, focus on not losing your lane instead of constantly trying for kills. Don't be totally passive, but don't go chasing people under their towers at level 2 because you just HAVE to get that kill. And if you're being pushed back don't try to kill soe minions while at 2 HP, losing those few minions will hurt you less than getting killed.

4. Win your lane (or at least don't lose it). That's your job early on. Park your arse in your lane and make sure you get more money than the other team. Try to kill the tower if you can, but don't get killed trying.

5. Learn to last hit. You may have noticed that only the last hit on a minion gives you money. This is called lasthitting and it's a crucial skill to acquire. Might seem small, but 20ish minions is worth one kill. That shit adds up. Also, constantly autoattacking your lane pushes it towards the enemy tower which in turn means it's easier for their teammates to come in from the river and kill you from behind. There is a time and place to push, but not all the time.

6. Don't worry about builds too much. Follow the reccomended builds at first until you get comfortable with the various items. The default builds for most champions are pretty solid. In time you'll see what you need (more damage? more health? etc.).

7. For advanced training, watch streams. Go to Own3d.tv or Twitch.tv and find a popular livestream. Just watch and you'll learn tons. Some streamers are better, some worse for this, but you can see a ton of advanced strategies and subtle things, like how to use wards, how to control the minion line, when to push, when to hug your tower, when to harass, when to be passive, etc.

Most important is experience, though. Pay attention to other players, especially the ones who are doing well. Don't get pissed when you lose, but try to see why you lost. What did they do that won them the game. If someone on your team is doing great, try to see what he is doing. It doesn't matter if he's using a champion you don't play, a lot of the general behaviour can be applied to any champion.

And finally, have fun, that's what really counts! :)

This is a great response. I've linked my friends to this thread to have a look. My mate that I usually lane with plays Tristana. We can really gank well since I usually take exhaust and ignite spells, he has that rocket jump stun and I also have my feast ability to lay down the pain fast without letting them go anywhere.

My other buddy usually takes mid and either plays this free to play normal llooking dude with a gun or an angel he bought named Kael I think.

Quick question I haven't been able to find out. Is there hot keys for items? It can usually be too late when I go for the health potion mid fight.

stick with cho'gath and build tank, that will let you still mess up peoples day but if you get focused you can walk away from it.

I'd say just learn your own style as you go and try ever champ whenever they are free to see who works well for you. Especially different roles - if you pigeonhole yourself as an AP player then you often end up fucking the team over by refusing to go ad or tank when its needed etc.

Also not using the builds pro team websites give every map as well. It's important to build for your situation - you aren't always best with the same build over and over.

I bought chogath the bug man who eats people and I quite like him so far. Though I worry he will be a target in pvp due to people not wanting him to get his stacks. I'm thinking I will also save up and buy xelrath the Mage ascendant. Since he's f2p right now and I like him.
For cho really just build a rod of ages early then going full tank, based on the situation is often good since that one item gets him all the damage he will need with his durability. Other than that just get practice with his rupture and build feast stacks when you can, but still make sure feast is off cooldown for ganks/teamfights (that true damage is invaluable)

I'd also recommend not going for 6300 IP champs till later on as again you are restricted what role you can go and there a lot of much cheaper champs that perform the expensive champs roles well also, sometimes even better.

there needs to be more off-tanks and assassin/carry players. there aren't enough of those.

Also Tanks and Support are useless NEVER play them. EVER.

Cho is a good character, your on the right path. But always try new characters, you may find that someone does something better for you than another.

Always play against the bots your first time using a new character also.

MObafire is a big key to success also, finding builds that work for you is the biggest step needed in that game.

There are very few tips that can be taught. Most of the things come from experience.
However if you want a solid piece of advice, learn how to last hit creeps. It can make all the difference in the world whether you're farmed or not.

DO NOT BUY RUNES!!! these are a waste of ip until you hit twenty.(tier 3)
Ignore the community(unless theres mia in it) cause they seem to have dildos shoved up their asses.
Dont buy champs until you have tried em, and found some with a playstyle you like.
If someone is missing from your lane(unless some1 has smite) type x mia
No matter what lane you have(except jungle) but wards and place em in bush. Some champs have em built in.
The better champs- rammus, garen, morgana, lee sin, sona, swain, sion, pantheon, gangplank, caitlyn, kennen, and brand. (i got as a wide viraity that i could think of. Theres others 2 and the so called weaker champs can still get stuff done.)
Last hit minions.
Rabadons Deathcap/Infinity Edge/Warmogs/Thornmail/Force of Nature are the exterme items. Depending on what you have there should be one of em in you build.
Not the tank-get behind him.
Dont baron unless its 3v5 ideally.(Some champs like tryndamere, fiddles, and yi can solo him-so ward)
Thats the best i can say about tips. The rest is experience.

Yes, the items slots are by default keybound to 1-6. With 1 being the upper left and descending to 6 in the lower right.

Get competent with Dota or Hon and you will come back as a very good LoL player.

Or just stick with Dota. Or join the Hon master race.
And here i thought the master race was already playing DotA 2 beta with me :p

Seriously though playing HoN is a very good way to get good at LoL, and even a better way to get used to the stardard DotA mechanics for DotA 2.

Edit: Word of warning, HoN community is a bit worse than in any other DotA game, just a bit though.

I was new to the game several months ago, and i have become better, although not nearly good enough for ranked play or anything.

The things that help me out the most were-

1. Learning to last hit
2. Learning to gank, help your teammates
3. Become aware, notice when people are missing from their lanes, calling MIAs
4. Buying wards, i didn't know how much wards helped until very recently
5. Learning how to play a champion, learn the technics (<-spell check has failed me) and limits of them

That's what helped me, just general playing of the game and practice always helps you improve

Also, although it is considered polite to call missing in your lane, you yourself should not require on it, as you cannot assume that every random person you meet will know to call SS, and you might end up being ganked without any SS being called.

Shen's a bit underplayed now, and being a tank, he can't exactly just show up to rape you because he doesn't really have damage output. Most he can do is save a teammate, maybe.

Oh and, tips. Check leaguecraft.com for champion-oriented guides, most of them are crap but those don't usually get many upvotes.
>.> shen belongs to nunu, rammus, amunu and nasus group of "extremely op tanks that nobody plays" *assuming you can build right*
nunu is op because his ap goes 1-1 (meaning 1 ap = 1 damage)
amunu is op because he can tank and literally walk over you
rammus is op because if you build him right he can destroy single targets along with being a tank
nasus is op because of siphoning strike
shen is op because that spamable Q and his passive

im not looking to brag or demand a cookie for my accomplishments just saying try the champs that onbody plays because very few people knows how to counter them and if your good with said champ and you know how to build right you can dominate with a tank who cant deal out a whole lot of damage.
oh and a tip bind Q W E R to Z X C V much easier for quickly selecting/using abilities

first off try to play with 4 of your friends in a premade, that is to have all 5 players people whom you know and with whom you can communicate with via Skype or something similar. A team that can relay information in real time has a HUGE advantage.
Also your worst enemy while playing LoL is the community. Not kidding, the biggest douches you'l ever encounter on the internet, so avoiding anything to do with them, a plus.

As for playing tips, well, experience is very important, just play the game, try out every single hero at least once so you understand how that hero works (you get different heroes every week)

Be aware of your surroundings

Try to get good mixed team compositions (again a good reason to play only with friends). Don't just pick strong damage heroes, get a tank in there too, a guy who's not going to get many (if any) kills, but who is going to enable his team to get a lot of kills and also help them survive.

Don't rely on a single type of damage too much in your team, have heroes who do magic, and heroes who do physical, otherwise it will be easy for the entire team to get resistance to your only type of damage.

Having a lot of hard CC(stuns, knock-up) is very useful. Often the enemy team might have a dangerous hero you want to disable fast, so a nice combination of stuns is very useful.

As for hero lane combos, first of all, remember that no combination is foolproof, you play against creative human opponents who WILL find a way to break your combo, either through creative gameplay, or creative combos of their own. That being said, here are a few I've found work nicely(I might slightly misspell some names, you'll get what heroes they are anyway):

XinZhao + Jax - Both strong damage heroes, have some measure of CC, but not 100% reliable since both rely on a trigger for their CC. Massive damage output, both have gap-closers. Not very resilient, work very well against squishy heroes since they can nuke them down VERY fast. Less effective VS resilient heroes or strong CC. Vulnerable to ranged heroes with good harass since they are both melee.

Blitzcrank + Alistar. Insane CC ability, both have 2 hard CCs, both are quite resilient (especially with Alistar's aoe heal). Blitzcrank can grab an enemy from quite a long range, Alistar can further push them back, both can knock him in the air. It takes good coordination so that your CC's don't overlap, but it is VERY hard to escape from them if played right. Again vulnerable against ranged harass, but effective against most heroes that don't have very strong escape mechanics. Biggest challenge is that is requires VERY good communication and coordination to make the most of the combo

XinZhao(or Fizz) + Karma. Interesting combo, Xin/Fizz jumps in and Karma mantra shields him, delivering a strong punch to the enemy with hopefully no damage taken. Works best against heroes that can't stop Xin from retreating after the attack. It makes for powerful harassment, and Xin's burst combined with Karma's heal, shields and damage make it a potent combo. Less vulnerable to ranged heroes than previous combos, fairly good lane sustainability with Karma's heal and Xin's passive lifesteal.

Amumu + Sivir. Works VERY well against squishy heroes, requires good communication or at least good awareness from both heroes (well, mostly Sivir). Amumu charges in with bandage toss, dealing some decent damage and stunning the enemy for Sivir's boomerang line attack to hit him twice. Hopefully after Sivir pops all her other abilities the target is dead. This combo is vulnerable to enemies who realize that they should stop Sivir fast and not focus Amumu. Any hard CC against Sivir will make this fast less effective. Mostly I've found this works because the enemy panics and doesn't react well to the situation since in the time he's stunned he will lose a LOT of life and then try to run away (not easy against Sivir). Again, vulnerable to hard CC and players with good situation awareness .

These are just a few I've tried and had fun with. Basically as I've said, no combo is fulproof, no combo can't be broken, it's really all about finding what works with you.
