Have you ever played a game that REALLY interested you, to the point where you actually want to learn more about the subject matter?

For me, Dynasty Warriors inspired me to read "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", considered one of the best pieces of Chinese literature. Also, upon learning that Bioshock was influenced by Ayn Ryad's "Atlas Shrugged", I bought the book and ended up reading one of the most influencial novels in American philosophy.

While people might say that games are just for entertainment, I've opened my eyes to some of the world's greatest literary works, all thanks to playing video games. So I ask you, were you ever inspired to learn from a video game?

Everything you've said is exactly what happened to me! Although I've never actually read the Romance of the Three Kingdoms but I've looked it up on the internet. Atlas Shrugged, while having good philosophy, was extremley B-O-R-I-N-G and Bioshock condensed it into that five-minute monolougue in the beginning which was much more tolerable.

Playing Civilization IV made me look at some world leaders and their countries, and generally made me more interested in History. Then I started GCSE History, and I'm doing Russia from 1904-Present.

Hum.

To add on, I really got into Greek Mythology from playing God of War haha. Unfortunately, it's the only game that really did the Greek Gods some justice.

Like with the OP, after playing Bioshock I really wanted to read Atlas Shrugged. I still have to buy the book though, but I will when I've got the cash for it.

This, except I don't take history classes anymore.

I'm another member of that group. the only test I aced in history was the WWII test and I had to correct the teacher sometimes.

Yeah, from various games like Loki, Ragnarok Online, Zeus: Master of Olympus and so on I've developed an interest in mythology and religions.

"Sid Meier's Gettysburg!" - one of the first games I bought. After playing it a few times I wanted to know about the battle, so I know own 5 books on the subject and know what happened in the battle backwards, forwards and upside down.

I also did the same with Microsoft' Close Combat A Bridge Too Far. I bought 4 books on Operation Market Garden and know all about what actually happened.
Now that I think about it, Gaming created my great passion for military history!

Call of Duty 4 - Weapons and armed conflict
World in Conflict - Military equipment and Cold war
BioShock and Fallout - the 50:s and Red scare
Call of Duty and Company of Heroes - World War II in general

Made my grades in history and social studies rise from B to A so I'm pretty happy they came in my way.

I'm no book critic, but I read a part of Ayn Rand's novel before throwing it away. The worst thing about the book is that the characters don't talk or act like people, it primarily dumps Rand's philosophy on you. I would only recommend her work to people who want experience how kooky people think.

Oh, also forgot to mention that hundreds of people begin their studies by playing games, watching movies and listening to English music.

I started watching English Cartoon Network when I was 5, and it has really helped not only with learning English, but also other languages come easily to me thanks to that.

BioShock also got me interested in "Atlas Shrugged" but when I found out it was at staggering 1200 pages I lost my will to read it rather quickly.

Count me in too. Nothing beats the feeling of correcting a teacher.
