Driving instructors must be fearless.
One survived a real "Saturday Night Special" near me. A group of drunken young men were egging the (sober) young male driver on along a fairly straight road from the pub towards a junction that isn't very obvious from a distance. However fast they were going, they didn't stop for the junction. They hit the passenger side of his car dead-centre and it went from being on its wheels on that side of the road to being on its roof in the field beyond the wall on the other side of the road without touching the wall. The side-impact bars in the passenger door broke the gear stick.

He was driving between lessons at the time. He's fine.

I bought my car before I passed (Over here you can drive as a learner without an instructor aslong as you display L plates and someone who has a valid liscence for more than 3 years is sat next to you).

Anyway, coming off a particularly nasty roundabout in the right hand lane, a guy in the lane to the right of me (which means he should be continuing around and NOT coming off at that junction) decided to cut across infront of me without indication. Scared the hell out of me, and at that moment I realised just how stupid some other drivers are.

One thing no one ever taught me is what to do when your truck starts to fishtail on icy roads. In a car you hit the brakes and turn towards the ditch, in a truck you hit the breaks and turn towards the ditch, but I turned to sharp and rolled it (because I wasn't use to driving a truck and my parents insisted it was safer to drive an unfamiliar truck because it had 4 wheel drive). Also watch out for deer, I just hit one last week, and the bastard took out my head light.

This happens to me on a nearly daily basis, especially on spiral (spaghetti) roundabouts, where you need to change lanes at least once before exiting. I had trouble with these when I was a learner until I realised that nobody else really knew which lane they were meant to be in either.

I JUST PASSED MY TEST ON FRIDAY! 2 minors bitchesssss ;D

But yeah, learning to drive sucks. Especially because my driving instructor was the most perverted guy in the world srsly. But he was a really good teacher so I stuck with him.

It's totally all worth it for the feeling when you pass though! Just wait until you start parallel park man, it absolutely bumfucks you.
haha wth? he was a pervert but he taught me well so it is ok? :D

I'm still learning, probably the funniest one was how people just shout at you for being a learner, some dick on a bike screamed at me and my instructor kept egging me to pretend to drive into him as we went past but that guy went down an alleyway.
I know what you mean here. I had some boyracer come up behind me just before a block of parked cars on the paths and literally wait 5 seconds before sounding the horn & speeding past, completely disregarding the 4x4 waiting to come through from the other side.

Thought I'd seen it all but shortly after that I got overtaken on a corner and the accelerating car barely missed someone using the opposite lane...

Well he wasn't a 'take you down a dark alley and rape you' sort of pervert! He was the sort've guy who would always comment on my body and tell me I was beautiful and get all flustered if my hand accidently touched his knee (which was always way too close to the gear stick D=).

I wore shorts one day and I swear he almost had a hernia XDD

Oddly enough, none. I was really cautious, and just figured things out on my own pretty fast before the actual instructors had me drive around anywhere.

Driving is extremely easy, I can't understand why so many people suck at it, especially women...
Well, Edzor. You sir are insensitive, sexist, and stereotypical. I am a women driver and im good at it. You are taking a few examples and putting the whole magority of good women drivers under the idea that we must suck at it.
Oh and p.s. I bet I could beat you in a 1/4 mile drag race if you got the balls.

On my first lesson I stalled no fewer than 9 times at a roundabout. The driver behind me obviously believed that I was doing it on purpose and that beeping his horn was the only way to help.
On my second lesson I flipped the car onto its roof while doing a three point turn.

I have a horn in the centre of the steering wheel on the van I was originally using to learn with. One time when I was just moving it a few feet forward, without my seatbelt, I accidentally revved too hard, lost balance with the clutch, came to a juddering halt and whacked my face on the wheel.

From the outside the spectacle was something along the lines of: vrrROOOMmmkcccchhhh BEEP

Yes. Exactly like that.

I'm doing considerably better now, but still haven't gone to a proper lesson.

Same! My driving instructor kept commenting on young girls that we passed while driving. And kept asking whether I had a girlfriend. It was super awkward. And he was a shit instructor, so I stopped after about 3 lessons.

Congratulations, by the way.

OT: I failed the license test a bunch of times, but I've never done anything terrible so far. I don't drive much though. I really don't enjoy it that much.

It took me quite a few lessons to feel confident enough to book my practical test (UK), but alot of the time passing the test it's self does come down to luck (time of day, traffic, road conditions etc).

Alot of my friends, who passed first time, terrify when they get behind a wheel for two reasons, 1) they're way too cocky about passing first time, and think they're Superman Car Jesus or something, 2) they were usually very lucky on their test day and are still a bit shit at driving, basic manouvers and stuff like that.

I passed both the written test and the pracitical test second time, I guess because I learnt how high the bar was set on the first try and then did everything I could to not fall into those same traps (good, blatant observations and not driving too slow) the second time. I think if I took the test again now, I'd fail for sure.

It took me a few attempts to pass and one person made fun of me so much 'cause she passed on her first try, until she actually totalled her car reversing into a bollard.

Still learning to drive now and still hating roundabouts.
The worst thing i've done I think is stalling in the middle of traffic lights. Twice.
I am not good at this D: .

On one of my early lessons a dog ran out into the road and I must have slammed on and stopped inches from it. My instructor got out the car and started yelling at the owner in the middle of the road.

And once and old woman veered off a roundabout after missing the junction she wanted and nearly side-swiped the car and forced me to mount the kerb to avoid getting hit. She never even realised and drove off oblivious.

I drove around in a parking lot with my dad when I first got my learners permit, progressively getting on the road. I also took a(n oddly cult-like) defensive driving class (an 8-hour classroom session and 3 2-hour road sessions) to get my conditional and cut insurance rates.

As for the road test, I passed the second time; the first time I was too wide on a right-turn, screwed up on turn signals for parking, and didn't know what "overnight parking" was. The successful test I just forgot to signal when moving from parallel/roadside parking.
